EU countries today (Sunday) launched the Corona vaccine campaign, in a moment of hope for a continent battling its worst health crisis in a century.

The vaccines, developed by German BioNTech and American pharmaceutical maker Pfizer, began arriving in particularly cold containers at EU hospitals from a plant in Belgium on Friday, and some countries have already started vaccinating yesterday.

In the first phase, the most vulnerable populations are provided among the approximately 450 million residents living in the 27 countries of the bloc - health care workers, nursing home residents and leading politicians.

This is to assure the public that the vaccines are safe and are the best opportunity to get out of the epidemic.

"It's not a pain at all," said Michaela Angel, a nurse at the Matai Balesh Institute in Bucharest, who was the first woman in the country to be vaccinated.

"Open your eyes and get vaccinated."

In Rome, five doctors and nurses wearing white robes sat in a semicircle in a contagious disease hospital to get their injections.

"This is a message of hope, faith and an invitation to this choice," said one Hmthsnim, Dr. Maria Rosaria Kfobianki, head of the Laboratory of viruses in the hospital and was part of the team isolated the virus in early February. "There is no reason to be concerned."

Head of the fight virus Corona in Italy, Domenico Arcouri, said it was important that the first injections were given at this hospital, where a Chinese couple who visited Wuhan and were diagnosed in January were among the first verified cases in Italy. .

"it's a beautiful day and icons - all citizens of Europe together begin their vaccinations, the first light after a long night," he told reporters outside the hospital. However, he warned: "We must continue to be careful and monitored.

We still have a long way to go, but we are finally seeing some light. "

At the Los Olamos nursing home in Guadalajara, northeast of Madrid, a 96-year-old resident and one of the caregivers were the first to receive the vaccine in Spain.

"Let's see if we can all behave properly and make this virus go away," said tenant Arsley Hidalgo, after receiving the shot.

In Prague this morning, Prime Minister Andrei Babish received his shot.

"There's nothing to worry about," he said.

Next to him sat in a wheelchair Emily Rafikova, who fought in World War II, and also received the shot.

The Czech Republic survived a severe injury from the plague in the spring, only to see its health system almost collapse in the autumn.

In all, at least 16 million positive cases and 336,000 deaths were diagnosed in 27 EU countries, while experts still agree that these huge numbers do not reveal the true extent of the epidemic, due to improperly diagnosed cases and a limited number of tests.

European Commission President Ursula von der Lane yesterday released a video celebrating the start of the vaccination campaign, describing it as a "touching moment of unity".

The start of the vaccines is supposed to allay the rage that has accumulated, especially in Germany, after Britain, Canada and the United States started the platform, with the same vaccines, a few weeks earlier.

In Germany, Hungary and Slovakia already started giving the vaccines yesterday.

A nursing home in Germany, where dozens of people were vaccinated on Saturday, including a 101-year-old woman, said that "every day we wait is one day too many."

Each EU country decides on its own who will receive the vaccines first, and they have promised to give priority to the elderly and residents of nursing homes.

EU leaders hope the launch of the vaccination campaign will help the bloc radiate a sense of unity in the complex life-saving task, after a year of difficulties in negotiating a trade agreement with Britain. The agreement was signed on Thursday, a week before the deadline.

"It's here - the good news of Christmas," said German Health Minister Jens Spann. "This vaccine is the crucial key to ending this epidemic, it is the key to bringing our lives back."

Among the politicians who are due to be vaccinated today to promote it in public are Slovakian President Zuzana Kaputova and Bulgarian Health Minister Kostadin Angelov.

Meanwhile, the first cases of the corona mutation that spread rapidly throughout London and the south of England have now been discovered in France and Spain. The new strain, which the British authorities claim is more easily contagious, has led European countries, the United States, China, Japan and even Israel to impose travel restrictions on Britain.

BioNTech says they are confident their vaccine works against the British mutation, but noted that more research is needed to be completely safe.

The European Medicines Agency will discuss next month the approval of a second vaccine against the virus, from a modern company, which is already in use in the United States.
