López Obrador advances the day of immunizations planned for Monday with the capital averaging 214 daily deaths

There is no time to lose and the Government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador knows it.

This Sunday the vaccination of health personnel against the coronavirus has resumed after the arrival of 42,900 doses this Saturday.

The authorities of the Ministry of Health had announced that the campaign would resume this Monday.

The president, however, met last night with the head of Government of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum, and other Cabinet authorities to evaluate a plan to expand beds.

Hospitals in the Mexican capital continue to be saturated due to the increase in infections and income.

December is on track to become one of the deadliest months of the epidemic in the country.

Personnel who work in the first line of care for coronavirus patients attended the 81st Infantry Battalion within the Military College, south of Mexico City, to be vaccinated.

The beneficiaries are mainly nurses and doctors from less affected states who have volunteered to attend the hospital emergency in the capital.

These are workers from entities such as Michoacán, Veracruz, Sonora and Colima, among others.

All of them are part of a program that the authorities have called Operation Chapultepec, which currently has 620 members.

Military personnel were also vaccinated.

This morning, 3,900 doses of the Pfizer BioNTech drug were applied that arrived in the capital on Saturday from the pharmaceutical plant in Belgium.

This Monday another 1,200 vaccines will be used.

With the week, vaccination also begins in the State of Coahuila, in the north of the country.

The situation in Mexico City continues to be pressing.

This Saturday, the capital authorities revealed through a report the excess mortality for the first 12 days of December.

In less than a fortnight, the authorities registered 2,664 deaths in addition to those expected, which are calculated using a model with information from previous years.

The average for those first 12 days was 214 daily deaths.

It is the second highest figure recorded in the year by the Sheinbaum Government after May, with 320, when the pandemic was at its peak.

The second half of the month does not seem to have more encouraging results.

The head of government has reported that the city has registered 1,923 deaths since December 13.

On December 24 alone, 212 new deaths caused by the virus were reported.

The Valley of Mexico continues to be the area where the most damage has been caused by covid-19 with 34,676 deaths, 20,868 have occurred in the capital while another 13,848 were documented in the neighboring State of Mexico.

The emergency forced the Ministry of Health and Sheinbaum to decree the red traffic light from Saturday, December 19 to January 10.

The measure sought to extend the restrictions in a month where the holidays represented a potential danger of an upturn in cases and hospital saturation for a system that already lives on the edge.

As of Friday, there were only 200 beds with fans available in the capital, the country's most populous city.
