Murder and default:

Acting Commissioner of Police, Major General Moti Cohen, and Central District Police Chief, Amichai Eshed, held a briefing for journalists this evening (Monday) following the recent murders in Lod, in which two people were killed and another was fatally injured.

As you may recall, last night Salman Azberga was murdered in Lod, apparently as part of the clan conflict in the city.

After his body was found, police detained two members of the Abu Saluk family, and began evacuating more family members from the city to a hiding place in Kafr Qassem.

But during the evacuation of the family members, two vehicles of assassins managed to infiltrate a convoy in the area of the Nachshonim interchange - despite the police escort, and opened fire on one of the four vehicles in the convoy, killing one of the vehicle's occupants and injuring the other.

Acting Commissioner Cohen said that following the recent incidents, additional police forces, including YSM and Border Police forces, will arrive in the city in order to reinforce the police in the city.

In addition, an investigating officer was appointed to examine the incident in which the convoy of cars belonging to members of the Abu Saluk family was attacked, even though the convoy was secure.

Cohen further noted that as part of the initial investigation, it appears that two vehicles participated in the assassination, with one of them distracting the police officers, and the other clinging to one of the family vehicles, and opening fire at the passengers.

A waterfall spokesman spoke after him, saying that the very fact that the assassins were not deterred by the police presence was a "serious and significant step up," and estimated that the assassination was carried out in retaliation for the murder of Azberga.

"This is a tension between the two families. Every aspect of the incident will be investigated to the end and lessons will be learned from it," he added.

At five o'clock the top police and the Minister of Police will hold a special discussion on the events today and the escalation and murders among clans in recent times.
