AirPods, Goncourt price, video games ... the French have sold their Christmas gifts online more than ever in 2020

2020-12-28T17:35:10.864Z

On the day of December 27 alone, the online sales site Rakuten noted a 30% increase in the number of ads posted compared to last year.

This is the little ritornello of the few days following Christmas Eve.

Each year, millions of gifts are sold on the internet by disappointed people who prefer to rebuild their financial health than to take advantage of the latest Goncourt prize.

And this year is no exception: the ads placed on Rakuten online sales sites are even growing compared to last year, with 1.5 million ads posted in three days on Rakuten, i.e. on some days up to 30% more than last year.

"We expect 4 million ads by the end of the week,"

explains Hélène Slamich, director of sales between individuals of Rakuten France.

A figure up 10 to 20% compared to last year, with some peculiarities related to this curious year 2020.

“We have noted almost as many announcements as last year on December 24 and 25,

continues Helene Slamich.

But on December 27, we noted a growth of + 30% compared to last year.

People probably spent a first Christmas on the evening of December 24 with one part of the family, and a second then with another part of the family, which boosted sales on December 27. ”

New consoles

The best-selling items on Rakuten after Christmas 2020 are older generation video games and consoles, “

because the new PS5 and XBox are out this year”

.

AirPods wireless earbuds have also been coming online a lot after Christmas.

Cell phones

“from two years ago”

, like the iPhone XR this year, are also a resale staple.

Just like the last Goncourt prize, “L'Anomalie” by Hervé Le Tellier.

At Leboncoin, like last year, we expect to mainly resell consoles and video games, decoration and books.

But another trend has left its mark on the site in 2020: that of buying second-hand Christmas gifts.

"We have seen for 4 years that second-hand purchases are more and more common and take precedence over resales, but never in proportions like this year!"

we explain.

Indeed, with the approach of Christmas, the platform has for example seen the demand for video games, DVDs, decoration, games and toys jump from +80 to + 90% in 2020 compared to last year.

More impressive still, the site saw a demand for books up + 200%, and video game consoles up + 230%.

In general,

the occasion worked very well this year

,”

concludes Hélène Slamich at Rakuten.

We had 60% more purchases compared to last year in the fourth quarter.

»A trend widely confirmed this year by all sites specializing in the sale of second-hand products.
