For many years she was the goalkeeper of the German national ice hockey team for women and played for the Tölzer Löwen in the second division.

Now Viona Harrer exchanged goalkeeper gloves and bat for baking gloves and oven slider.

Reichersbeuern -

Viona Harrer has been working at Meier's family bakery in Reichersbeuern since this summer.

“I actually owe it to Corona,” the 34-year-old explains how she got into the job.

Because the crisis brought about a forced break from work.

"So I had time to think about what I actually want." It was a long process.

"After my sporting activity, I noticed that I was rather unhappy in the office." For her, sport was the fulfillment.

"So I wanted to find something that was just as fulfilling for me."

During the spring crisis, she worked a lot at home in the kitchen.

"How probably many people," she says with a laugh.

"But I've always been interested in nutrition."

In the summer she read that the Reichersbeurer bakery was looking for someone - "also unskilled".

Because the activity has nothing to do with your actual degree in sports management.

"But I thought, I can try it." Bakery boss Florian Meier suggested that she work for a week to see if it worked for both sides.

It fit.

“So I stayed the same,” says Viona Harrer.

She now helps out in the bakery three days a week.

She was looking for a job for the morning so that she could be there for her child in the afternoon.

While the start of work on Tuesday (8 a.m.) and Friday (6 a.m.) is still humane, Viona Harrer is in the bakery on Saturday from 3 a.m.

But you don't mind.

“That suits me.

I've always noticed that my performance curve tends to decline in the afternoon. ”As a baker's assistant, she works fully with me.

You have to roll pretzels, cut doughs according to the right weight, put rolls in the oven or help with the cakes in the pastry shop.

"There is always a lot of cleaning work on Saturdays."

Christmas is one of the high phases in the bakery.

“Platzal is a lot of detailed work.

You don't earn much with it, but they are still part of it. ”Another hot phase - as she was told - would be the carnival with the donuts.

What do you love about the bakery trade?

“You work in the morning, it always smells good and it's warm,” she says with a laugh.

At the moment she is very satisfied with the work.

You have also already found out what options there are to get an external degree.

“I could well imagine that.” However, the job is also very physically demanding.

She does not yet know how things will continue on the ice.

She actually trains the next generation of goalkeepers at EC Bad Tölz and SC Reichersbeuern and works as an honorary coach at the German Ice Hockey Federation - including the U18 women's national team.

But this year, most of the courses fell victim to the Corona crisis.

She herself still plays for the ECT women's team in the national league.

“But I think this season was over too.” In the meantime, Viona Harrer will continue to pursue her childhood dream and stand in the bakery.
