The coronavirus epidemic has, as might be expected, dramatically shifted the order of priorities in our society.

In its latest barometer on the concerns of the French, the CSA institute notes that at the end of the year, health largely dominates concerns and naturally climbs to first place.

44% of people questioned now worry about it, compared to 37% in June 2019. The day after the first confinement, last May, they were even 57% to consider that the health risk was the priority subject, far ahead of the environment ( 28%) or purchasing power (36%), still in second place, even if it falls to 30% this month.

In June 2019, carried by the movement of "yellow vests", the latter was however the first concern of the French with a rate which pranced at 42%.

In eighteen months, it therefore shows a significant drop of 12 points!

The environment, for its part, and while it had even become the most promising theme just a year ago, collecting a rate of 38%, today falls in fourth position with a small 26%.

Environmental considerations are now overtaken by insecurity which, with one point ahead (27%), takes third place.

“Last May, they were only 18% of French people to worry about their safety.

But the debates on the ensauvage of our society and the violent various facts which occurred during the summer produced their effects

, decrypts Julie Gaillot, director of the pole society at the CSA institute.

Insecurity gains nine points in the space of nine months.

The poll, which put terrorism aside, also notes that this subject has gained momentum again.

The curve has started to rise again since the assassination of teacher Samuel Paty in October in Yvelines.

That same month, 18% of those polled said they were concerned about this threat when they were only 10% five months earlier in May 2020. The rate is now 23%.

As for employment, for the time being, it remains a secondary concern.

Even if the health crisis is causing an economic crisis, it worries only 20% of respondents, against 19% in June 2019. A relatively stable rate which is explained, according to Julie Gaillot, by

"the shield of measures taken by the government to cushion the effects of the crisis ”.

Marked differences

But this barometer, which delivers the major trends in our society, has also taken the pulse of various social categories.

As a result, among workers, who are more exposed to economic vagaries, worries are much greater about employment.

31% care, or 11 points more than the general average.

In this analysis by profiles which shows marked differences, the executives are much more concerned about the environment (34% or + 8 points).

This study, which also questioned 18-24 year olds, reveals how their problems differ from those of the general public.

For this age group, health is not the dominant concern (37%) but indeed employment.

40% of the young people questioned say they care about their professional future against 20% in the general public, that is to say 20 points more!

"

They are really worried and are wondering today how they will enter the job market"

, underlines the director of the society pole of CSA.

So much so that the environment, which was by far the major subject just a year ago (52%), has now fallen to 29%.

Relegated today to third place.
