Saudi Arabia's terrorism court today (Monday) sentenced the prominent women's rights activist Lujin al-Hadlul to five years and eight months in prison, the kingdom's media reported.

This is despite the international criticism of her arrest and the pressure to release her.

Hadlul, 31, has been incarcerated since 2018, when she was arrested alongside 12 activists and activists for the rights of other women.

The court ruled that two years and ten months of punishment would be on probation.

Saudi officials said the activists were suspected of harming Saudi interests and supporting hostile elements abroad.

Human rights groups say some of the women, including the thinned, were held in solitary confinement for months and subjected to torture such as beatings, flogging and sexual assault. Riyadh officials denied the allegations.

Her conviction will be the first test of the relationship between Regent Muhammad bin Salman and US President-elect Joe Biden, who described the Saudi kingdom as "leprous" over its human rights situation.

She has 30 days to appeal the sentence.

Activists and activists were arrested before and after the kingdom lifted the ban on women driving as part of Ben-Salman’s reforms, alongside the repression of its critics and rivals.

Just about three weeks ago, a court in Riyadh sentenced Dr. Walid al-Fatihi, who holds U.S. citizenship, to six years in prison, despite U.S. pressure to release him.

Human rights groups said it was a political persecution.
