Excavations in Pompeii are not uncommon and always make for an interesting find.
What researchers have now discovered is a real surprise.
In
Pompeii
,
researchers
discover
what is known as a “thermopoly”.
The discovery is about an antique
snack bar
.
A
vulgar inscription
was
also
carved
into the
find
.
Pompeii - The remains of
Pompeii
,
buried under lava, mud and stone
, have been excavated
since the 18th century
.
The Roman city fell victim
to
the eruption of the
Vesuvius
volcano
in
AD 79
and was buried under ashes.
The new find, now on display in the Parco Archeologico, is astonishing among archaeologists.
But what is the newly exhibited
find
and what makes it so special?
The now exposed stone counter, completely preserved and painted in bright colors, may seem unspectacular at first glance.
According to archaeologists, however, it is a so-called "
Thermopolium
", or rather an
ancient snack bar
.

Archeology in Pompeii: find is "extraordinary"
According to the
German press agency
, the “snack bar”, as the
Museum Parco Archeologico
calls it, is the oldest in all of
Pompeii
: “The opportunities to study this thermopoly are extraordinary because it is an area for the first time this type was excavated in its entirety, ”emphasized a representative of the museum.
The yellow painted counter impresses above all with realistic and colorful
pictures
.
In addition to a
nymph
on a seahorse, the counter is particularly decorated with
animals
and everyday situations.
It is believed that the animals depicted on it, such as the
ducks
and a
rooster
, were slaughtered and sold there.
Holes are also notched
in the
find
, which, according to the
German press agency
, assume that the food will be displayed for sale.

Find in Pompeii: Vulgar joke was carved into the ancient snack bar
It seems like a visit to the
takeaway
was a popular pastime in
Pompeii
as early as the first century
.
Even a
joke
that you could often find in a bar today was
carved into the
side of the counter in
Latin
: “Nicia's shameless shit”.
The experts suspect that "Nicias" could have been the host of the Thermopolium.
During their
excavations
in 2019, the researchers found human bones in the brightly painted remains.
According to initial findings, these are the
remains of
a person around 50 years old who was presumably
lying on a kind of bed
at the time of the
disaster
.
Is it the remains of the host Nicias?
In any case, it is certain that the
business
was closed forever with the eruption of Vesuvius.
