Moscow-Geneva-SANA

The United Nations Special Rapporteur in Geneva, Jelena Dovgan, called for the lifting of the unilateral US sanctions imposed on Syria, stressing that they are a violation of human rights, especially with the spread of the Corona pandemic.

In a statement on the negative impact of unilateral coercive measures on respect for human rights today in Geneva, Dovgan explained that additional Western sanctions, especially the so-called (Caesar Act), which came into force in the United States since last June, are a violation of human rights and could become an obstacle to reintroduction. Reconstruction of Syria and it must be lifted immediately, especially with the spread of the Corona pandemic.

Dovgan added that in the absence of reconstruction work, the Syrians are forced to live in extremely harsh conditions that can be defined according to international law as “harsh,” noting that anyone who helps rebuild what the war on Syria has destroyed could impose US sanctions against him in particular, and employees may be exposed. Foreign companies and representatives of humanitarian organizations are also subject to sanctions.

Dovgan expressed her concern about the unilateral imposition of penalties without a court ruling and the inability to appeal these measures, which constitutes a violation of the rights of persons on the sanctions lists.
