The carnival camp has been an attractive offer for children who are enthusiastic about basketball for many years.

During this year's carnival holidays, it was the last big event for the basketball players of TSV Jahn Freising that was not affected by the corona pandemic.

Freising

- The year started normally for the Jahn basketball players, with sporty ups and downs. The basket hunters' greatest concern was certainly the men's team, which had to leave the regional league in 2019.

The coaching team Michael Buhl and Gojko Stojisavljevic tried a fresh start in the Bayern League with a strongly rejuvenated team.

Just not being relegated a second time in a row, that was the only goal of the season.

Only a miracle could prevent the renewed descent

The Jahn Youngsters toiled and fought in every game.

The successes did not want to occur.

The new year began as the old one ended: The Freising had to admit defeat at VfL Treuchtlingen II with 70:81 and remained penultimate.

Defeat followed defeat.

On March 8th, the fourth last day of the match, they lost the basement derby at TSV Schwandorf with 60:77, and were thus bottom of the table.

Only a miracle seemed to save the Freising from relegation from the Bayern League.

Women's team and youth at the forefront

The women's team in the district league was completely different: although it lost the top game against leaders Olching in January, it remained in the promotion race thanks to further successes.

The Jahn women were finally on the upswing again after lean years!

Apart from the problem child Bayern league team, the Jahn basketball players draw a positive balance in the sporting field until the end of the season in March.

“Many of our teams were very good in the table.

There were officially no champions, but the U 14 male 1, the U 14 male 2 and the U 18 female were unreachable in first place.

Our U 12 female and U 12 male have secured the runner-up, ”says department head Michaela Ruis in retrospect.

Then, in the course of February, Covid-19 gradually crept on.

The basketball players were just able to manage the traditional carnival camp.

This year those responsible had organized something special: The basketball players from the roller sports department at USC Munich supervised a learning station on one of the two training days.

Tim Peisker from Freising made the contact.

He started with wheelchair basketball at USC and is now playing at a higher level in Ulm.

“I got into wheelchair basketball because of a foot injury.

I wanted to keep fit and then asked USC if I could train with them, ”said Peisker at the time.

Association declares the season over

Immediately afterwards, Corona moved more and more into focus.

As early as the first week of March, the Jahn basketball players were considering how or whether they should continue training at all.

They also expected the sports halls to close.

On March 11, the Bavarian Basketball Association (BBV) informed its clubs that the game would be interrupted.

A week later he then declared the season over.

How things will go on was now the central question, especially for men 1. Is the last threatening relegation?

Big cheers in the Jahn camp at the beginning of April: The team remains in the Bayern League and the women's team has been promoted to the Oberliga.

Keep fit with online offers

Then the sporty lockdown: The coaches tried to keep their teams halfway fit through online offers.

After the three-month compulsory break, the Jahn basketball players started practicing again at the end of June.

They were allowed to do at least one throwing and dribbling training in the evening on the outdoor sports area in the Savoyer Au.

"There can be no question of proper training yet," said Michael Buhl, department head and coach of the Bayern league team at the time.

"But we are very happy that we can meet again at all and that the city has given us this opportunity." Outdoor basketball was popular until the end of September.

When you finally got into the hall in October, the number of infections rose again.

The Bayern League team was able to play at least two point games before the next out.

It won in Burghausen, but lost in Kottern.

At this point in time, the BBV still believed it could handle a normal season, but the Jahn managers no longer.

Jahn managers with courage and vision

They not only showed great courage, but also vision and, above all, a sense of responsibility towards their members.

On Monday, October 19, chairman Franz Lupp and the head of the basketball department announced that - with the exception of Bayernliga men - all other teams had been logged off from play.

“Youngsters who will graduate from school next year or club members who work in systemically relevant professions play in our teams.

Given the increasing incidence, we cannot send them to games in other cities weekend after weekend and the associated risk of contracting corona, ”Lupp explained.

Basketball boss Michaela Ruis rates the past year as "difficult".

The tasks of the department head had shifted.

“Our word of the year is certainly a hygiene concept.

We met every day in September and October to work on it. "

The social contacts are missing

The greatest concern was how to keep the members and especially the children and young people on the ball.

According to Ruis, most of the young players came regularly to practice outdoors in the summer.

“However, we lack social contacts.

Team sport lives not only from joint training and games, but also from everything that goes with it.

Cohesion suffers. "

Season restart on March 6th at the earliest

At the turn of the year, which is marked by the hard lockdown, the Jahn basketball players look expectantly into the near future.

It is doubtful whether training and match operations can be resumed anytime soon.

The Bayern league teams had an online meeting with the association on the third weekend in Advent to clarify the further course of events.

Originally the BBV wanted to continue the season on February 21st, now March 6th is scheduled.

The plan is to make up for all games that were canceled in October and then start a simple round from March.

The whole thing would last at least into June.

According to Michaela Ruis, this poses problems because there would probably not be a sports hall available for training because the schools would need them for the final exams.

Should it not continue in March, a tournament weekend is being considered.

"On January 16, the Bayern division want to discuss the next steps again," says the Jahn division manager.

Then one will - maybe - be able to foresee whether the current tough lockdown has shown success.
