Alberto Fernández announces bill on abortion 0:57

(CNN Spanish) -

The Senate of Argentina approved the bill that legalizes the voluntary interruption of pregnancy.

Despite the fact that in Argentina - as in Brazil, Chile and Mexico - abortion was allowed in the event of rape, the country had seen several attempts to decriminalize the voluntary termination of pregnancy, but had not been successful, so far.

The abortion laws in the world

Abortion laws vary dramatically around the world: in some countries it is a personal decision, in others it is completely illegal, and in many countries abortions are only accepted in certain situations, such as fetal malformations or in cases of rape.

The United States is one of nearly 60 countries that provide legal access to safe abortions.

Although abortion has been legal in the US since 1973, access to treatment depends on state-determined laws, and most states have gestational limits ranging from 20 to 24 weeks.

The Center for Reproductive Rights, a nonprofit organization in the United States, counts those countries where abortion is legal, where it is allowed only in certain circumstances, and where it is totally illegal.

The last two updates were those of Ireland, which in May this year held a referendum in which legalizing abortion won by majority, and Chile, which last year allowed abortion under certain circumstances.

Countries like Colombia and Peru have an abortion policy that allows it in specific cases and conditions.

In Antigua and Barbuda, Brazil, Dominica, Guatemala, Panama, Paraguay and Venezuela, abortion is prohibited, but it is allowed to save the life of the woman in case of risk.

Mexico is among those countries, but some states have added other causes to allow termination of pregnancy.
