The Senate of Argentina approved early this Wednesday the bill for the legal interruption of pregnancy that allows free and legal access to abortion until the 14th week of gestation.

After several hours of debate, 38 senators voted in favor, 29 against, 1 abstained and 4 did not attend.

It had already been approved in the Chamber of Deputies on December 11.

Now, the bill will be sent to President Alberto Fernández for enactment.

Given that it was initially presented by the Fernández government and that it was one of his campaign promises, the president is expected to promulgate the law.

Apart from decriminalizing abortion, the bill allows conscientious objection to health professionals who refuse to practice it.

According to the Argentine Minister of Health, between 100 and 120 people go to public hospitals in the country every day to attend to the consequences of clandestine abortions.

This is one of the reasons that prompted the president to send the bill to Congress.

"The legalization of abortion saves the lives of women and preserves their reproductive capacities, many times affected by these unsafe abortions," Fernández said in November.

Before the debate, the senator of Together for Change for the province of Tucumán, Silvia Elías de Pérez, warned by raising an appeal of unconstitutionality if the project was approved.

"If today this project becomes law, it will be a judge of the Argentine nation who ends up deciding why we are going to raise the unconstitutionality," said the senator.

So far in Argentina, according to the Penal Code, abortion with the woman's consent is punishable by one to four years in prison.
