"This is an incident in which the suspect assaulted his wife by pushing her and slapping her. She claims there were a number of previous incidents. In yesterday's incident, after assaulting her, she fled to the son's room. The father came with a screwdriver and stabbed the son while lying in bed. "Seconds later he returned with a large kitchen knife and threatened him in the neck with the knife and later tried to strangle him with the blanket and ran away."

This is what Sergeant Yehuda Gigi told Judge Ofir Katavi-Rivlin in a hearing held on December 24, in the Magistrate's Court in Petah Tikva. The police asked to extend the man's detention for another five days.

This case is one unfortunate example of the phenomenon of domestic violence, which grew latest. most are crimes of man towards his partner. preoccupation with the media focusing mostly cases of the most shocking of domestic violence that result in bodily injury, and failed to explain the phenomenon. Last week, 83 men suspected of domestic violence were brought to courts across the country

.

The data is based on the records that appear on the court website, not including confidential hearings, and therefore the number may be even higher.

One of them is the same man who attacked his wife and son.

"They called the police. The father fled. The father later came to the police station and turned himself in," Sergeant Gigi told the court. The suspect's lawyer said in court: "I am dying for the statements that it only happened yesterday and we are at the beginning of an investigation.

On his face in my eyes we are at the end of an investigation.

I will ask for the days of detention to be shortened. "Judge Ketavi-Ravlin extended the detention by three days. On December 27, he was released under house arrest - not to the house where his wife and son live.

Forced drugs on his wife and caused hospitalization

The reality is that every day, suspects in domestic violence come to the various courts in the country to discuss the police's request to extend their detention.

In a large proportion of cases, the courts do not always grant the full days of detention that the police request and are satisfied with detention for only a few days.

The case where the bus driver risked his wife's life is an example of this.

"The suspect forced his wife to take an MDMA pill and then demanded that she get on an exercise bike. She did not feel well and asked to be taken to a hospital and he did not comply with her request. Finally her family evacuated her to the hospital where, in tests, drugs were found."

The incident took place this week in Jerusalem.

A man who worked for many years as a bus driver for Egged, was arrested by the police for questioning and brought to the Jerusalem Magistrate's Court for a hearing on the police's request to extend his detention.

Maj. Gen. Maya Karshai from the Jerusalem District told the Jerusalem Magistrate's Court Judge Oren Silverman the grave suspicions and asked the judge to extend the man's detention for six days.

The suspect's defense attorney claimed in court that "this is a 44-year-old man with no criminal record at all, a bus driver by profession has worked for Egged for 17 years. Recently he works for a private company. This is almost 20 years of married life."

The woman complained to the police that this was not the first time the man had attacked her and the judge was presented with findings that substantiate heavy suspicions against him.

Judge Silverman clearly understands the problem of domestic violence and encounters it himself in court.

"We have recently witnessed serious cases of domestic violence and when we are in the first application, there is no explanation of the respondent for the alleged presence of a drug in the woman's body and confirming that he gave her something problematic," it said.

The police requested that his detention be extended by six days, as stated, but the judge ruled only three days.

True, arrest is not a punishment.

It is designed to prevent disruption of an investigation and in case of danger posed by the suspect.

But there is no doubt that this case could have ended differently.

"Choked her next to the kids, twice"

In another case of domestic violence that took place last week, police were reminded to summon the man for questioning and arrest him just nine days after the woman mustered up courage and complained.

Sergeant Moshe Piestro, who represented the police at a hearing in the Tel Aviv Magistrate's Court, told the judge that "although the suspect has no criminal record, the complaint was filed nine days ago.

The lady claims that the suspect strangled her in the last case near the children, twice, in her throat, so that she would stop grumbling about him, and she told of two previous cases.

"I will tell what is serious and what is the danger - the things the suspect says, I have not seen such things for a long time, even though I have been here for many years and I think that what the suspect says indicates danger in a way that he cannot be released and the investigation should be conducted.

Police recalled investigating more than a week after the complaint.

The suspect's defense attorney asked at the hearing what he meant and the police representative replied, "that she is pushing him into a corner and it could end badly, but there is more" and refused to elaborate - but noted that these are serious and obvious things.

"This is violence that has not resulted in any form, no punches, no signs or things," the suspect's defense attorney said in his defense. Defense counsel also raised the default of the police who summoned the suspect only after nine days. A police spokesman admitted in court that this was a mistake. "I talked about it with the investigating officer. No mistake is made by mistake," said Sergeant Pistro.

Justice of the Peace Efrat

Bosni

understood the danger posed by the man. "A perusal of the investigation file reveals that there is a reasonable suspicion against the suspect for committing the offenses attributed to him. The suspect has no criminal record, however, he ties himself to what is attributed to him. I find that there is an evidentiary basis that establishes a reasonable suspicion for the offenses for which he was suspected and that there is a reason for his arrest. "Despite the understanding, the judge extended his detention by only two days.
