According to the
Bad Reichenhall police station
, the serious traffic accident
occurred on the
B20
in the direction of Berchtesgaden at
around 9.45 a.m.
An 83-year-old from Berchtesgaden drove his
Mercedes A-Class
in the direction of
Bayerisch Gmain
and wanted to turn left into Hohenfriedstrasse.
In doing so, however, he overlooked an oncoming ambulance that was on its way with special signals in the direction of Hallthurm.
The
vehicles crashed head-on

The ambulance then broke through the guardrail there and fell about five meters into a stream bed, the car came to a standstill on the edge of the road.
The 85-year-old wife of the Berchtesgadener, who was a passenger in the car, was trapped and had to be
freed from the car
by the
Bayerisch Gmain volunteer fire department

Both were seriously injured and brought to
Salzburg hospitals
.
The 35-year-old driver of the ambulance was
brought to the
Bad Reichenhall Clinic
, slightly injured
, and her 43-year-old passenger was seriously injured in a Salzburg hospital.
By order of the
public prosecutor's office
, an
expert was called in
to clarify the accident.
Due to the recovery of the vehicles, the
B20 had
to be completely closed at times, which resulted in long traffic jams in both directions.
However, the main road was opened to traffic again at around 2:30 p.m.
The total damage to both vehicles and the guardrail is estimated at at least 80,000 euros.
Criminal proceedings for negligent bodily harm were initiated against the person who caused the accident.
