For the first time in his tenure: The Senate bypassed a veto imposed by Trump and approved the defense budget
The Republican-controlled Senate approved the $ 740 billion budget despite strong opposition from the outgoing president.
Trump, who will leave the White House on Jan. 20, suffered a heavy defeat two days before the new congressional inauguration.
"Missed an opportunity, pathetic!"

The U.S. Senate voted tonight (Saturday) to approve the defense budget law, thus bypassing for the first time a veto imposed by outgoing President Donald Trump.
The Republican-controlled Senate has nevertheless voted against the president's position, which will leave the White House on January 20.
The result in the vote was unilateral, with 81 senators voting to vote for him and only 13 voting against him, more than the two-thirds majority required to reverse the veto.
Only seven Republicans voted to leave the veto intact.
The vote on the budget, which will amount to $ 740 billion, took place about two days before the inauguration of the new Congress.
The new budget has garnered support from both Republicans and Democrats, and is expected to raise the salaries of soldiers serving in the regular service, among other things.

If the budget was not approved, it would be the first time this has happened in 60 years.
The House of Representatives already approved the budget last Monday, also with a unilateral result when 322 voted for it and only 87 opposed it.
The House of Representatives also needed a two-thirds majority to repeal the president's veto.
The outgoing president was unhappy with the Senate decision and reacted angrily.
"Our Republican Senate missed the opportunity to get rid of Article 230, which gives unlimited power to technology companies," he wrote on his Twitter account.
"Pathetic!" He added.
Trump vetoed the budget on Dec. 23, though lawmakers were expected to overcome it.
Trump has voiced opposition to several budget items, including those restricting the withdrawal of forces from Afghanistan and Europe and removing the names of Confederate leaders from military bases.
He also wanted the budget to include the repeal of the law protecting social networks from defamation lawsuits.
