The discovery of an ancient Roman-style underground cistern estimated to be about a hundred years old at the foot of the Bishop of Sham Shui Po Mountain has aroused the concern of conservationists and the public, and particularly pointed to the lack of government departments' handling of heritage conservation work.

Hong Kong currently has 1,444 historical buildings. Some of the monuments will be developed into museums for conservation, education and revitalization purposes. For example, the Lee Cheng Uk Han Tomb Museum in Sham Shui Po, the Lo Uk Folk Museum in Chai Wan, and the upper part of West Page The Kiln Folk Museum, but these three museums are the least visited museums under the LCSD.

Large, interactive museum, popular historical museum branch, few people enter

Like the newly discovered ancient Roman-style underground cistern, the Li Zhengwu Han Tomb Museum contains design elements of underground arches. Scholars infer that the tomb was built in the Eastern Han Dynasty.

The Li Zhengwu Han Tomb was listed as a historical site in 1988 and is now one of the five branches of the History Museum. However, the total number of annual visitors in recent years is only about 40,000, which is less than the main museum of the History Museum with an average of 1 million visitors. About 25%.

As for the remaining museums with the least visits, they are all branches of the History Museum and the Cultural Museum. They are smaller in scale, including the Shangyao Folk Museum and Luowu Folk Museum, which recorded an average of 10,000 and 40,000 visitors respectively. Mainly exhibits and buildings.

Based on the figures from 2014/15 to 2019/20, science museums, history museums, and cultural museums are the most popular museums. Among them, science museums have the highest number of visits each year. These museums are all large in scale, exhibits and designs It is more diversified, and various activities or special exhibitions are held regularly.

Museum attendance fell after a sharp increase in 2017/18

The number of visitors to the museums under the Leisure and Cultural Services Department has increased significantly since 2017-18, and has continued to decline after the period. In addition, many museums will be closed for a long time due to the epidemic in 2020, and a total of about 4 million visitors will be recorded in 2019-20 , About 2 million less than the previous year.

The main increase in the number of people from 2017 to 18 came from popular museums such as the Science Museum, Space Museum, and Cultural Museum. During this period, the annual attendance of the Science Museum increased by 60% compared with the previous year. The special exhibition "Eternal Life Legend——" held by the Science Museum in June 2017 "Perspective of Ancient Egyptian Civilization" averaged more than 8,000 visitors per day, nearly breaking the record for the highest number of visitors in the museum.

16 private museums opened in the past ten years, only a small part of them received government funding

In addition to the museums under the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, there are currently more than 35 private museums in Hong Kong, including the Hong Kong Maritime Museum, the Chinese University of Hong Kong Art Museum, the Sixth Factory Textile Culture Art Museum, etc. Among them, only the Hong Kong Maritime Museum directly receives regular government funding. Some other museums participate in the "Revitalizing Historic Buildings Partnership Program", renting government-owned historic buildings at symbolic rent, but they still need to be responsible for their own profits and losses in their daily operations.

In response to questions from Legislative Council members in July this year, the Home Affairs Department stated that the government welcomes applications from museum operators to fund cultural and artistic projects or activities to support the operation of museums.

In addition, the LCSD museum has regular cooperation with other local museums, such as invitations to participate in the International Museum Day, mutual loan of collections, and joint activities.
