A few days before Christmas we are giving a gift to Romans and citizens all over the world.

From March 1, the Mausoleum of Augustus will be reopened to the public, a masterpiece of ancient Rome, a treasure of inestimable value that is reborn in all its splendor

”, declared with great pomp the mayor of Rome, Virginia Raggi.

The mausoleum of Augustus will welcome the public after fourteen years of restoration, in spring 2021. It is already possible to book a future visit.

Symbol of Roman greatness

Octavian, the future Emperor Augustus, would have had this monument built, from the year 28 before Jesus Christ, as a manifestation of the greatness of his power and a symbol of the importance of Rome.

Huge building, all white and surrounded by many trees, the Mausoleum was topped by a bronze statue with the effigy of Augustus, on its roof.

First a funeral monument, the Mausoleum was transformed into a fortress by the Colonna family in medieval Rome.

Plundered, transformed into a garden during the Renaissance, the monument will then become an auditorium, a concert hall or even a workshop.

Mussolini had undertaken to restore it with ideological ulterior motives.

He thus arranged the

piazza Augusto Imperatore,

dominated by a grandiloquent and fascist architect, and had medieval buildings destroyed around this architectural gem.

Abandoned, the place had been closed for restoration from 2007. Since 2017, the project has been supported by the TIM foundation (named after the Italian telecommunications company), which has invested more than 6 million euros in the restaurant business.

According to the mayor of Rome, Virginia Raggi, the restoration of the Mausoleum of Augustus by the TIM foundation illustrates the investment of a large Italian company "

in the care and enhancement of the immense architectural, archaeological and historical heritage. of our city.

"

The opening ahead of the museum was presented on 18 December with the president of TIM Foundation, Salvatore Rossi.

Virginia Raggi praised “

this significant testimony to the efficiency and foresight of public-private collaboration.

"

If the place reopens on March 1, visits will be free.

They will become chargeable - except for Romans, for whom entry will be free all year 2021 - from April 21, "the

day we celebrate" Christmas "in Rome,

" recalls Virginia Raggi.

From that date, tours of the Mausoleum will also be enriched with digital content, in virtual and augmented reality.

The museum itinerary, planned for a 50-minute visit, will retrace the different historical phases of the Mausoleum.

Visits will take place Tuesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (last admission at 3 p.m.).
