Nancy Pelosi was re-elected last night (Sunday) as Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, with the new Congress convening for the first time amid political uncertainty, with Senate control undecided and the Republican battle over the presidential election results. After Democrats lost 11 seats in the last election, and the majority they held was reduced to 222 to 212.

Five Democrats in the House of Representatives chose not to support it - two of them voted for Democratic lawmakers who did not run, while three others simply voted "present." Pelosi said in a speech. After her election that “as we have been sworn in today, we are given a deterrent and demanding responsibility like the one faced by all previous generations of leadership.

We are beginning the convening of the new Congress, in a time of extraordinary difficulty.

"" It is time for our nation to recover.

The first thing in priority will continue to be the war on the corona virus.

And we will win it, "she added. Pelosi even pledged that the citizens would receive additional financial assistance following the approval of the last aid package in Congress last month, worth $ 892 billion.

The Senate remains Republican-majority ahead of Georgia's re-election on Tuesday, giving its members a platform to re - raise the baseless claims of US President Donald Trump that his loss to President-elect Joe Biden is a result of fraud.

Multiple federal reviews, as well as tests conducted by the states themselves, have found no evidence of the kind of widespread fraud that Trump claims took place, but Republican senators and members of the House of Representatives plan to appeal the election result when Congress approves it Wednesday.

A Republican attempt to advance a ten-day emergency review of the election results in the swing states, led by Sen. Ted Cruz, drew criticism from Republican Sen. Lindsay Graham, a loyal ally of Trump.

"It seems to be more of a political exercise than an effective cure," Graham said.

"I will follow closely. But chances are it will fail."

"A deterrent and demanding responsibility."

The balance of power, tighter in both houses of Congress, could encourage moderate members of each party to flex their political moves, especially after Trump leaves the White House on Jan. 20 and Biden takes office.

But leaders in the House of Representatives and the Senate have tried to sound optimistic, despite growing challenges.

"From the political controversies to the deadly epidemic to rivals around the world, the obstacles we face are many and they are serious," said Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

"But there are also many reasons for hope," he reserved, noting the launch of the corona vaccine.

"I would say 2021 already looks better."

"We will start a new chapter of cooperation between the parties"

Democratic Majority Leader Stanley Weir said he hoped the new Congress would "turn the page" from the party split, "and begin a new chapter of cooperation between Democrats and Republicans."

However, the smaller Democratic majority and the still raging coronary epidemic made re-election a more complicated task for Pelosi, the only woman ever to hold office.

"It's not personal, and it's not done maliciously. It just represents a feeling in my county," Democratic Representative Alyssa Slotkin of Michigan told reporters before voting "present."

She explained the decision by saying that "we need a different crop (of leaders), which represents a wider part of the country."

"You can't risk Republicans being elected to office."

The small Democratic majority left less room for Democrats who oppose a vote against Pelosi, without risking a possible win for Republican leader Kevin McCarthy, who ran against it.

"We are just a very small amount of votes, and we can not risk electing Republicans to the post," said Democratic Representative Alexandria Oxio-Cortez, who expressed interest in new leadership but still supported Pelosi.

In the Senate, Vice President Mike Pence swore in 32 senators while conducting the priesthood oath ceremony in pairs due to corona restrictions.

A Republican victory in one or two Georgia Senates facing re-election on Tuesday will bolster the Republican majority led by McConnell.

A Democratic victory will lead to an egalitarian Senate, where Vice President Kamela Harris will hold the vote after being sworn in on January 20th.
