Have you heard from your friends that in a psychometric test you are being asked questions, at the rate of one minute per question?

Did you understand that more than 170 questions need to be solved and alas for your test if you go to the bathroom during it, because there is simply no time?

This is true, but only partially.

The good news is that similar to the matriculation exams, the psychometric test can also be eased.

The facilities are designed for different populations, in order to equalize the opening conditions of all participants.

But there are those who come to the test in advance with a disability - those who are diagnosed with learning disabilities.

For years, students with learning disabilities were afraid of the psychometric test and chose areas of study that did not require them to take the test they thought they would not be able to pass.

Today, the same students are tested in both the matriculation exams and the psychometric exam, under adapted conditions that include, among other things, time extension, calculator, reading in English, chapter-by-chapter breaks and other adjustments according to the relevant disability and achieve impressive results.

The word ease may imply that someone will make the test easier for them, but this is certainly not the case and the intention is for accommodations, i.e. a way that allows each psychometric examinee to be tested under the unique conditions tailored to him.

The growing awareness of learning disabilities has led to an increase in the number of candidates for academia suffering from various learning disabilities, who are forced to take a psychometric test as part of the screening and admission process.

The National Center for Examinations and Assessment has created psychometric tests for learning disabilities, adapted to different types of disabilities, and held at special times.

Psychometric for the learning disabled - what are the reliefs?

In order to enable people with various learning disabilities or disabilities to be tested in the psychometric test in a way that will, if possible, circumvent their disability, the National Center for Examinations and Assessment conducts an examination under adapted conditions.

The exam is designed for people with severe primary learning disabilities that appeared in the early stages of learning and that have a significant impact on past and present learning functions, for people with severe primary attention deficit disorder that appeared at a young age and that significantly affect not only learning but other areas of life and people With physical, medical (e.g. juvenile diabetes) or mental disabilities.

One of the most requested facilitations is eligibility for a psychometric test for a learning disability conducted in a computerized format and answered under the name "Mapam". In this test, the questions appear on the computer monitor and the time allotted for each answer is extended beyond a minute. Of options - from inserting a calculator to perform basic arithmetic operations, through breaks between parts of the test to time additions in different parts of the test.

The National Exam Center tries to adapt the test conditions to the limit of each student. Therefore, there is a wide range of options, and the National Center uses one Of them, or in some of them, according to the needs of each examinee. These are the options available:

These are the options available today for relief -

  • Mapam: A computerized exam that includes extra time for each question (at least twice as long for each question, relative to the time given for an equivalent question in an unadapted exam).

  • Extension of time in some or all of the exams (usually an additional five minutes per episode).

  • Breaks between exams (usually five minutes).

  • Using the calculator for the four arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division).

  • Listening to an English exam.

  • Enlarging the exam form or answer sheet.

Adjusting different physical conditions as needed due to medical limitation.

The National Examination Center discusses applications for customized conditions only after registration for the exam.

It is not possible to wait for approval for a customized exam and only then decide on what date to register.

Therefore, one should register for the exam, and only then send to the national center all the relevant documents.

More than 90% of students take a psychometric course before the test (Photo: PR)

But how can people with learning disabilities prepare for psychometrics?

Some students want a psychometric course because personal attitude or learning framework is important to them, some students want a course so that someone is available for questions and can accompany them until the test, but the reality is that today more than 90% of students take a psychometric course before the test and because the psychometric score is relative. So it's a shame to be left behind.

In recent years, along with the rising awareness of the various learning disabilities, they have realized the immense importance of adapting teaching methods and ways of working for students with learning disabilities and ADHD.

That is, in the said teaching methods not only are they tested under adapted conditions, but also the material is studied in a way that is right for the needs of the student.

The amount of material that the examinee is required to remember in a psychometric test for learning disabilities is not small in relation to the amount required from a regular examinee.

This situation creates additional difficulty for those with learning disabilities, as the structure of a regular course is not suitable for them.

In recent years, psychometric courses have been opened for people with learning disabilities that are adapted to the needs, limitations and modes of perception that characterize people with disabilities.

These courses are not conditional on eligibility for an adapted exam, and can be studied by anyone who suffers from learning disabilities.

The teaching methods for psychometrics of people with learning disabilities are different and are characterized by learning that includes the use of all the senses by a variety of illustration methods, by teachers who have been trained to teach learning disabilities.

If so, the right course of study and a tailored exam allow students with learning disabilities to cope fairly and successfully with the exam and thus also break the glass ceiling and also give students with learning disabilities the option to stand out and excel in the exam.

So how do you choose where to study?
