At about 11 am today (4th), the police received a report saying that at the junction of Shanghai Street and Mong Kok Road in Mong Kok, a male pedestrian was hit by an electric bicycle and suffered minor injuries. After being treated by an ambulance, he refused to be sent to hospital.
The police arrived at the scene and stopped the electric bicycle and its owner.
According to reports, the 53-year-old owner of the carriage met with a woman to hand over the electric car involved at the site. The other party ran into a male passerby during the test and fled.
Initial investigation by the police revealed that the female car owner was arrested and detained on suspicion of "driving an unregistered vehicle", "driving a motorcycle without wearing an approved protective helmet", "driving without a driver's license" and "driving without third party insurance" and detained for investigation .
The case was handed over to the Traffic Accident Investigation Team of West Kowloon Region for follow-up and the woman suspected of causing the accident was pursued.
According to the existing laws, it is illegal to drive electric movable tools on local roads.
In mid-December last year, the police cracked down on illegal driving of electric movable tools, including electric scooters and electric bicycles, in many districts in the southern New Territories. During the operation, a total of 17 electric scooters, 15 electric bicycles and an electric four-wheel skateboard were seized. .
At that time, the police reiterated that electric movable tools are not suitable for common use with ordinary cars on the road, nor are they suitable for use on sidewalks or cycling tracks.
Anyone using unregistered and licensed electric movable tools on roads, footpaths and cycle tracks may violate the Road Traffic Ordinance, Chapter 3374 of the Laws of Hong Kong and other related laws.
Once convicted, the maximum penalty is a fine of HK$10,000 and imprisonment for 12 months.
