Iran's Revolutionary Guards have taken control of a tanker sailing under the South Korean flag in the Persian Gulf, the country's media reported today (Monday) that the takeover of the vessel was due to "pollution" of the Gulf waters by chemicals.

The ship's crew members arrested are from South Korea, Vietnam, Myanmar and Indonesia.

The British Maritime Service said earlier today that an "interaction" between the Iranian authorities and a merchant ship in Egyptian Hormuz led to a change in the course of the ship, which advanced into Iranian territorial waters en route to the southern port of Bender Abbas.

Two private maritime security companies said the tanker, owned by DM Shipping Co, was on its way from Saudi Arabia to the United Arab Emirates.

Several similar incidents have occurred in recent years, usually in parallel with tensions between Iran and the United States and the West.

In recent days, pressure has risen in the region, marking the anniversary of the assassination of General Qassem Suleimani in an American UAV attack, Tehran's promises to retaliate against the assassination of nuclear scientist Muhsin Fahrizadeh, whom it attributes to Israel, and fears that outgoing President Donald Trump will act militarily against Iran.

The Iranian government today announced a 20% renewal of uranium enrichment at the Purdue underground facility, in the most serious violation of the nuclear deal to date.
