From this Monday, the first business day of the year, traffic fines are

82.5% more expensive

.

The reason is that the increase in the Fixed Unit (UF) has already begun to take effect, which is the value that is taken as a reference to calculate the sanctions and which has not been updated for almost two years.

Each UF went from $ 21.40 to $ 39.05.

In this way, the most common infraction, which is bad parking and which is sanctioned with 100 UF, now has a fine of $ 3,905.

Each fixed unit is equivalent to the value of

half a liter of the highest octane naphtha at the headquarters of the Automóvil Club Argentino (ACA).

The Undersecretary of Justice of the City verified that it now costs $ 78.10, for which it established that the new cost of the UF is half of that figure, $ 39.05.

This equalization system was created so that there would be a form of automatic indexation of the value of fines, which due to inflation ended up being ridiculous.

The update occurs biannually, but the Buenos Aires government skipped the increases of August 2019 and February and August 2020. First it was due to the economic crisis, which was later added by the coronavirus pandemic.

This explains the sharp rise in the cost of fines since Monday.

The most common offense is

poor parking

.

As it is equivalent to 100 fixed units, the fine went from $ 2,140 to

$ 3,905.

The same value applies to those who do not wear a seat belt, make a prohibited turn or do not respect the priority of pedestrians.

Also for those who violate the prohibition of entering restricted areas such as the Microcentro or the Courts area.

Currently, due to the pandemic, these restrictions are suspended and it is not known when they will return to force.

The same goes for metered parking and spaces where parking is usually prohibited from 7am to 9pm. It is not yet known when it will normalize.

Bad parking is one of the most committed offenses.

And it was repeated especially during the most rigid phases of the quarantine.

In addition, it is expected that this year the parking law voted by the Legislature will take effect and that will make it necessary to pay to park in more spaces in different neighborhoods of the City.

Those who drive

talking on a cell phone

also have a fine of $ 3,905 (100 UF), although that figure doubles and climbs to $ 7,810 for those who are sending text messages.

Speeding.

One of the most committed infractions in quarantine.

Now he has fines that reach $ 156,200 in the case of exceeding 140 kilometers per hour.

Another of the offenses that lead the ranking is that of

speeding

.

Even in quarantine, with less traffic, not respecting the maximum speeds was one of the factors that caused three crashes per day, just 8% less than last year.

These are data from the City's Road Safety Observatory (OSV), which determined that, with fewer vehicles in circulation, there was a greater number of violations of traffic regulations, such as speeding or crossings with red lights.

Precisely those two fouls are the most expensive ever, and the amount is now even higher.

The

fine for speeding

depends on the severity of the offense.

The maximum penalty is for those who circulate

at more than 140 km / h

and ranges between $ 15,620 (400 UF) and $ 156,200 (4,000 UF)

The fine for running a red light is between $ 11,715 and $ 58,575.

Meanwhile, the fine for exceeding the maximum by up to 20 km / h on common roads or by up to 40 km / h on fast roads costs $ 5,857.50 (150 UF).

And if these limits are passed, the penalty is $ 9,762.50 (250 UF).

When the offender is driving public transport in service, the fine is doubled.

Another offense that was seen in quarantine, with empty streets, was the

violation of the red light

.

From this Monday, those who commit this offense have to pay from $ 11,715 (300 UF) up to

a maximum of $ 58,575

(1,500 UF).

Meanwhile, evading the payment of the toll is

sanctioned with a fine of 150 UF, which amounts to $ 5,857.50.

The same penalty is charged to the driver who invades the exclusive lanes of public transport.

On the other hand, those who do not respect the instructions of the authority receive a fine of $ 2,733.50 (70 UF).
