Recitation of ancient poems is one of the traditional methods of learning Chinese. When a scholar at the Education University of Hong Kong taught her daughter to recite Tang poems, they found that chanting not only helps memorize, but also enhances students’ interest in learning ancient poems. Therefore, it took more than two years to cooperate with the University of Education team. Zhang Ling, an assistant professor in the Department of Chinese Linguistics, The Education University of Hong Kong, said that the inspiration for creating the app came from a small dispute between the eldest daughter and her husband six years ago. "At that time, the husband hoped that his eldest daughter, who was only 3 or 4 years old, would learn Tang poetry, but the daughter thought ancient poetry was boring. "I don’t want to remember", born in Guangzhou, she speaks Cantonese as her mother tongue, combined with the knowledge of Beijing Normal University, Guangzhou Sun Yat-sen University Chinese Linguistics and Hong Kong Polytechnic University Ph.D., remembering that ancient Chinese poetry and song are inseparable, almost all poems They all come from songs, and chanting helps to remember, so chanting is used to attract daughters to learn ancient poems.

When I was a child, my family was poor and I never learned a musical instrument, but the principles of linguistics I learned before allowed me to distinguish the difference between speaking and singing.

Compared with reading aloud, chanting can promote children's memory of texts, and it is easier to "get into the brain", which helps to increase students' interest in learning ancient poems.

Zhang Ling explained that the tone of Cantonese will drop when speaking. In addition to the rhythm of singing, the biting of words is also adjusted to a high pitch, which makes the poems more harmonious and beautiful, easy to remember, and easier for school children to engage in.

Spend more than two years and spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to design a free app

Zhang Ling therefore cooperated with the Education Department of Education University of China in 2018 and invited the students of the Department of Music of the University of Education to assist.

Utilizing the e-learning project funds of the University of Education (estimated to be about hundreds of thousands), it took more than two years to develop the mobile phone APP "Ancient Poems Cantonese Singing Cantonese Key", which provides functions of listening, singing, and second creation of ancient poems , I hope to attract more people to learn ancient poetry.

To show that chanting is not limited to certain poems, ten ancient poems cover different eras and genres, including five-character poetry, five-character rhythm poem, seven-character absolute poetry, seven-character rhythm poem, and Yuefu poem.

The program is now available to the public for free. Zhang Ling said that in addition to inviting 7-year-old two girls to try out the app, the app is also promoted to kindergartens where young children are studying. In the future, it will depend on the response of the society and academia and whether there are new funds to determine whether to add new features. Or the number of ancient poems.

Many primary schools in Hong Kong have adopted general education in recent years. However, Zhang believes that Cantonese has more circumflex and frustration, which is helpful for learning ancient poetry and creation. Students should make good use of their own language resources, and Putonghua is close to written language. It is recommended that both are emphasized.
