Washington-SANA

American scientists have warned that parts of the Amazon rainforest will collapse by 2064 due to rapid expansion in the use of resources and fires fueled by climate change.

According to the American "Science Alert" site, the geological scientist Robert Tovey Walker and his colleagues from the University of Florida in a new report focused on recent research on the Amazon rainforest and reached a grim conclusion confirming that prolonging dry seasons in forests will not allow them to recover from fires within the five years they need. What allows flammable grasses and shrubs to take hold.

In the report issued by the journal “Environment Science and Policy for Sustainable Development,” the scientists explained that there is a high probability that the southern Amazon region will reach a turning point sometime before 2064 relative to the current average length of the dry season, which poses a threat to biodiversity and the environment and pushes more Plants and animals to the brink of extinction.

Scientists emphasized the necessity to think of the forest ecosystem as a "pump" that recycles moisture, which supports regional precipitation. If people continue to destroy the forest, the amount of rain will decrease and in the end the pump will be destroyed and the water security evaporates for more than 35 million people who consider this region their home.

Geological models predict that once the deforestation limit in the southern Amazon region reaches between 30 and 50 percent, this will reduce the amount of rain by up to 40 percent in the west, noting that the Amazon region is one of the most biodiverse places in the world on Earth.
