Many netizens often lament that they have to return to work for at least 9 hours a day. They feel that it is hard and stressful. The society has also discussed setting the maximum working hours for many years. However, on the other hand, there are previous generations who questioned the current "don't pay for younger children."

One of the reasons is believed to be that the previous generation had more working hours than today!

The above chart shows that working hours continue to decrease both in Hong Kong and throughout Asia.

In 1960, Hong Kong people worked an average of 2722.4 hours per year and 10.5 hours a day based on five days of work.

As of 2017, Hong Kong’s man-hours have been reduced to 2185.6 hours per year, which is nearly 20% less than in 1960, which is equivalent to an average of 8.4 hours of work per day. This reflects that the previous generation had more working hours than the current workers, or made the previous generation feel that Don't get it."

However, regardless of the nature, type, technology, social development, etc. of the work, there have been tremendous changes in the past few decades. It is hard to say that "the younger generation will not be able to afford it" based on the length of working hours.

In fact, the decline in working hours is a global trend.

In 1870, many countries in Europe and the United States averaged over 3000 hours of work per year, with 11.5 hours of work per day based on 5 days of work!

By 2017, 147 years later, the average annual working hours in six European and American countries had been reduced to less than 2,000 hours, which is equivalent to 7.7 hours of work per day in five days of work.
