The largest demonstration gathered 2,500 people in Wiener Neustadt (east), according to police, who arrested several people for non-compliance with anti-Covid measures.

About 1000 other people gathered in Amstetten (north), and 500 in Judenburg (center).

Smaller protests, some presented as "

marches

" to escape restrictions on gatherings, were also recorded in several other towns in different parts of the country.

Rather spared by the first wave after being confined early, Austria, presented as a model student in the spring, is now struggling to contain the Covid-19 pandemic.

She had to re-limit herself on Boxing Day, barely 20 days after a strict regime of restrictions was lifted.
