In recent years, there have been news about wild boars rampaging in the urban area. According to the preliminary statistics of the AFCD, there are as many as 3,300 wild boars in Hong Kong. In just four years from 2016 to 2020, complaints about wild boar nuisances have soared. More than doubled.

In order to curb the growth rate of wild boars, the Fisheries and Conservation Department began to inject contraceptive injections for wild boars or perform sterilization operations on the spot in 2017, while other wild boars will be released into the wild.

Wong Ho-yin, a member of the Wild Boar Concern Group, believes that humans have invaded the habitat of wild boars without corresponding compensation. As a result, wild boars are forced to fall down the mountain to find food. He urges the relevant authorities to plant wild boars that love to eat plants in the wild. Their habitat returns to nature.

According to data from the Fisheries and Conservation Department, the number of complaints about wild boars has doubled from 583 in 2016 to 1,184 last year. As of November 2020, the number of complaints has also reached 920, showing an upward trend.

In a written reply to a Legislative Council member’s question today, the AFCD stated that the government has suspended the arrangement of hunting teams for wild boar hunting operations since 2017 and ceased operations in 2019. The AFCD launched a pilot program for wild boar capture and contraception/relocation at the end of 2017 , To deal with the problem of wild boar causing nuisance in the urban area.

The department will relocate nuisance wild boars to rural areas far away from residential areas, and will prevent the nuisance or rescue wild boars from contraception or sterilization where feasible, so as to avoid the increasing number of wild boars accustomed to foraging in residential houses. Fishery and Conservation Department The relevant work has been regularized in 2019.

Catching wild boars and sterilizing in situ

The AFCD conducted a preliminary study on the number of wild boars in 2019. A preliminary analysis showed that there are 1,800 to 3,300 wild boars in the rural areas of Hong Kong. The department will collect and analyze further data. It is expected that the estimation will be completed in 2021.

According to data from the AFCD, from the end of 2017 to November 2020, the AFCD has arranged 128 operations to capture 666 wild boars, of which 296 wild boars were used for contraception or sterilization, and 499 wild boars were relocated away from residential areas. Outskirts.

A spokesperson for the Fisheries and Conservation Department pointed out that the use of contraceptive vaccines for wild boar contraception and sterilization operations for wild boars are the world's first experimental program.

The results showed that 93% of wild boars showed no signs of getting pregnant again 2 to 21 months after the contraceptive vaccine. In addition, the AFCD has been trying to perform permanent sterilization operations on wild boars in the field since 2018. However, the operation process is complicated and preparations are required. In addition, some wild boars are caught in the narrow environment, steep terrain or no road connection, and surgery cannot be performed in emergencies, so it cannot completely replace the contraceptive vaccine.

In November last year, Sai Kung District Councillor Chen Jialin and Southern District Councillor Peng Zhuoqi successively posted posts on social platforms to directly attack the process of wild boar sterilization.

Chen Jialin pointed out that people often feed wild boars in the Beigang Al area of Sai Kung. After several months of monitoring by the Fisheries and Conservation Department, they decided to sterilize the wild boars in the area and successfully anesthetized 8 wild boars with an anesthesia gun.

Chen Jialin said, "The biggest one is more than 56KG to be lifted by a few big men. After anesthesia, you need to weigh and take ultrasound to ensure that you are not pregnant. If you are pregnant, you must get a contraceptive shot. If you are not pregnant, you will have a minimally invasive sterilization operation. All wild boars will chip and cut their ears for identification."

Feeding wild boars attracts downhill for food

A spokesperson for the Fisheries and Conservation Department pointed out that the reproduction rate of wild boars is closely related to the supply of food.

The department’s investigation also showed that the increase in wild boar nuisance cases in recent years is mainly related to feeding and improper handling of outdoor garbage.

Therefore, the AFCD will continue to work closely with relevant government departments to remove food inducements that can cause nuisance black spots, including cleaning up food residues, stepping up the message of not feeding wild boars, and improving the design of garbage collection facilities.

In addition, the AFCD, in cooperation with the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department and the Environmental Protection Department, conducted a consultancy study earlier to improve the design of garbage bins and garbage collection facilities, thereby reducing wild boars and monkeys looking for food in outdoor garbage.

The contractor has designed three garbage bins to prevent wild boar or monkey nuisance, and conducted field tests at more than 70 garbage collection points in Hong Kong that are nuisance by wild animals from time to time. The tests will be completed in the third quarter of 2020.

Research shows that the new design can effectively reduce the nuisance of wild animals.

The FEHD will adopt newly-designed garbage bins in more appropriate locations according to actual needs to reduce the nuisance of wildlife.

Wild boar concern group: It is recommended to grow food in the wild to feed pigs

Wong Ho-yin, a member of the Wild Boar Concern Group, said that neutering wild boars is a helpless decision. "(Humans) invade the wild boar habitat and also need to be sterilized." He emphasized that the relationship between wild boars and humans should avoid mutual interference. There is nothing wrong with the department’s approach, but he doubted that the department’s resources are limited. Only a few hundred wild boars are caught in a year, which is really a drop in the bucket for controlling the overall number of wild boars.

Wong Ho-yin, a member of the Wild Boar Concern Group, urged the relevant authorities to plant plants that wild boars love to eat in the mountains and return their habitat to nature.

He continued that the frequent conflicts between humans and wild boars are due to the over-development of humans. "There is no way to restore the (wild boar) habitat, and build up buildings and roads all the way, but there is no compensation for the green belt, which is unfair to the wild boar." He targeted the nuisance community. Huang Haoxian believes that the relocation of wild boars to the wild is only a matter of equity.

He suggested that the relevant authorities should start from the source and "grow the wild boars' favorite foods in the wild, such as rhizomes and fruits such as apples." He continued that most of these plants will have earthworms under them, so they can provide more food for wild boars and avoid them. Go to the city for food.

Recently, there have been frequent cases of wild boar "trouble" in the urban area. At the end of December last year, a "sheep baby" parked in Tai Mo Shan Country Park was brutally bitten by a family of five wild boars. At the end of November, many Central and Western District Councillors on Hong Kong Island, Peng Jiahao A post on social media stated that a number of wild boars would automatically show up in the area at about 10 pm and go to the roadside to search for accumulated rubbish for food; at the end of October, there was a small wild boar crossing the road in Tseung Kwan O. The iron knight who could not be caught knocked down and ran over, vomiting blood and died on the spot.
