Submarine cable will link Europe to Brazil

EllaLink will be a direct link to Latin America. A subject with strong political content for the European Union.


Submarine cables provide more than 90% of international internet connections.

While around twenty of them cross the Atlantic, none make a direct connection between Europe and Latin America.

This will soon be done with EllaLink, which will link Portugal to Brazil in May 2021.

Besides its route, this cable has many other particularities.

First of all, the investors who finance it are atypical to say the least.

No telecom operators around the table, no more than Google or Facebook, these “Usual Suspects” of the development of underwater telecom links.

EllaLink is first of all financed by its future customers.

The Bella consortium, which brings together European and Latin American universities, has contributed 25 million euros to the project.

The balance of the 150 million financing comes from more traditional structures in this type of operation.
