The transparent workers have never been more transparent.

True, the reduction in construction has led to a reduction in the annual death toll, but that is no consolation.

It is said that there is no evil without good.

If one is looking for a positive point in the corona crisis then at least one can say that there has been a decrease in the number of fatalities in fatal work accidents at construction sites.

The plague and closures have reduced the number of casualties by 2020, certainly good news.

In the construction industry, 31 workers were killed, compared to 40 workers in the previous year.

Falling from a height continues to be the leading cause of fatal accidents.

In all employment sectors in the Israeli economy, there was a decrease in the number of accidents compared to 2019 and 2018.

This year, a total of 57 people were killed in work accidents, compared to 84 workers last year and 70 workers in 2018.

Here is a report of a routine log of operations from construction sites around the country from this week in the new year: 13:13: A 27-year-old worker fell from a height at a construction site in Rosh HaAyin and was evacuated in fair condition.

14:39: A 27-year-old worker was hit by a heavy object that fell on him at a construction site in Modi'in and was evacuated in critical condition with a head injury and was respirated.

15:23: A 70-year-old worker was hit by a heavy object that fell on him in Ashdod and was killed on the spot by a severe head injury.

15:15: A 40-year-old worker fell from a height at a construction site in the Hefer Valley and was evacuated in fair condition.

The Ministry of Labor has stepped up enforcement and reports nearly 3,000 construction sites have been closed in the past year due to safety deficiencies defined as life-threatening, almost twice as much as in 2019.

According to a report published by the Occupational Safety Administration at the Ministry of Labor, the number of safety orders issued for construction sites where safety deficiencies were found jumped from 2,501 in 2019 to 5,532 in 2020. The number of inspections of construction sites also increased by 47%, from 8,331 reviews Last year to 12,250 in 2020.

It remains only to hope that next year the works will return to full scale, and yet the decline in the number of dead and wounded will continue.

Beyond expressing hope, it is important that actors take responsibility for the issue once and for all and invest the necessary resources in improving safety.

It seems that with the election and Corona the matter will fall between the chairs again.
