«Many companies today still use pen and paper to manage processes and, when it comes to efficiency, we usually talk about relocation or the end of certain professions.

Instead the key point is to increase man with artificial intelligence instead of thinking about using it to replace him ».

Ernesto Mininno, co-founder of Cyberdyne (yes, the citation of the sci-fi classic Terminator is deliberate), a career as associate professor at the Polytechnic of Bari left behind to become an entrepreneur, goes straight to the point: the role of artificial intelligence in Industry 4.0 is fundamental, but to make sense it must be focused above all on assisting insiders in real time when making decisions at all levels, to improve processes and, with the same infrastructure, optimize costs.

It is the natural evolution of what we call "Industry 4.0", where the multiplication of connected machines and sensors produces a growing amount of data, effectively enabling AI to assist decision-making processes in every sector, from manufacturing to automotive. , from services to fashion.

"The theme is to learn how to use computerization in a digital factory in a more 'modern' way - explains Mininno - to have timely data, for example collected through IoT devices, on what is happening along the production chain, which was not previously easily feasible precisely because the information management was completely analog ".

In short, the growing amount of information we have is "nourishment" with which to feed AI to make it capable of helping us choose in every situation: from how to plan production to how to produce using which people with which skills, up to deciding how organize warehouses and distribution.

These are steps that practically all companies, in every economic and industrial sector, have in common, which present similar or "isomorphic" problems, and which for this reason can be faced and solved using a common model of artificial intelligence, to be accompanied with small adaptations to experts who are responsible for making decisions.

In the vision of Ernesto Mininno - who was also a guest of our conference on AI last October - AI does not make jobs disappear, but on the contrary it serves to "empower" those who occupy them, according to the logic of augmented mind and with a view to an ever closer collaboration between man and artificial intelligence.

The technology developed by Cyberdine (co-founded together with Giovanni Iacca and which employs 10 people including application engineers and developers) is already a mature product called Kimeme, which is used in different contexts: in manufacturing, for example, it allows a multinational '' automotive to optimize the planning of component production, or to a fashion company to organize the relationship with the subcontractors who have to make the clothes, managing from the delivery of raw materials, the organization of work and deliveries;

in the field of services, it is used to make the provision of cash at ATMs more efficient, saving time and travel.

And then, again, the AI developed by Mininno and his associates helps to organize shift rotation in call centers more effectively, where the system finds a balance between the need to reduce costs and compliance with trade union agreements which, for example, include holidays and turnover.

“In this way, artificial intelligence helps good management of the workforce, effectively dispelling the myth of AI as a tool for capital to dominate the workforce,” notes Mininno.
