More than 50 pan-democrats in Hong Kong were arrested by the police on suspicion of violating the National Security Law on the morning of January 6, including an American lawyer resident in Hong Kong.

Reuters reported that US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo described the incident as an atrocity on the same day. He also said that the United States was considering sanctions against those involved, including considering restricting the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in the United States to respond.

Pompeo said that the arrest once again reminded everyone about the CCP’s contempt for the people and the rule of law. The arrested person was charged with vain charges for exercising democratic rights. He said that the arrested person should be released immediately and unconditionally.

He said that when Hong Kong is under the suppression of the Communist Party, the United States will not stand by. The United States will consider introducing sanctions and other restrictive measures, exploring restrictions on the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in the United States, and imposing additional sanctions on officials who undermine Hong Kong’s democratic process.

Pompeo also mentioned that the United States will not tolerate arbitrary detention or harassment of American citizens.
