(CNN) -

Denmark's flagship broadcaster has suffered a setback for its latest children's television show, "John Dillermand," an animation starring a man with a penis so large and flexible he can save children from danger , look for objects in a river and even use it as a bouncer.

The show, whose 13 episodes are available to watch on the DR network website, follows its main character as he navigates a variety of unexpected scenarios caused by his inexplicably huge genitalia.

In episode one, for example, the mustachioed Dillermand uses his gigantic organ as a leash for his dog, but is quickly inundated with requests from his neighbors to take their pets out for a walk, too.

At another point in the show, he's caught floating in midair after balloons are tied to his groin.

In another episode, he breaks a friend's vase with his penis and must raise money to return it, and in a third, he uses it to steal ice cream at the zoo.

The show's opening montage also shows him using his genitals to keep a lion away from a group of children.

In general, the show was received with hilarity in Denmark and on the Internet, with many praising it as an appropriate and joyful way to teach children about human anatomy.

But some disagreed with the central trait of the main character.

Danish politician Morten Messerschmidt, a member of the right-wing Danish People's Party, said that children should not be forced to see a cartoon of an adult man's groin.

And a handful of parents have taken to the Facebook page of the RD Children's Network, urging them to remove the program.

A RD spokesperson told CNN that most of those who criticized the show did so "without even (having) seen the show, because it hadn't been launched yet."

"Now the vast majority here in Denmark are ... making fun of the few critics," added Sarah Cecilie.

"Hundreds of thousands now support 'John Dillermand'".

"In Denmark now it's a huge hit, and kids are watching it in large numbers," he said, telling CNN that 200,000 people watched the first episode.

In the network's online show description, they state that while Dillermand's genitals put him in shameful situations, they can be used for good once he accepts that he is different.

DR is the oldest and best known radio station in Denmark and was a founding member of the European Broadcasting Union.

The network is funded by the taxpayer, making it the Danish equivalent of the BBC or PBS.
