The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, today called on US President Donald Trump to disavow "false and dangerous speeches," noting that the storming of his supporters on the Capitol yesterday "shows the effect of incitement on violence and hatred."
"We are deeply disturbed by the attack on the Capitol, which clearly demonstrated the devastating effect of the prolonged and deliberate distortion of facts and incitement to violence and hatred by political officials," AFP quoted Bachelet as saying in a statement.
Bachelet added that allegations of electoral fraud had been made in an attempt to undermine the right to political participation
"We call on politicians from all colors of the political spectrum, including the president of the United States, to disavow false and dangerous rhetoric and to encourage their supporters to do the same," she said.
Bachelet also expressed her shock at the "serious threats" that journalists were subjected to as well as the destruction of their equipment during the unrest in the Capitol. "We support the numerous calls for a full investigation into yesterday's events," she said.
