Amid extreme tension and after the afternoon riots in Parliament, the United States Senate resumed this Wednesday night the session in which Joe Biden's triumph in the country's presidential elections will be validated.

"The Senate will not be intimidated, we will not be taken out of this chamber by thugs, gangsters or threats, we will not kneel before intimidation," said Mitch McConnell, the Republican majority leader in the Upper House.

The Senate session had been interrupted in the afternoon when a mob of protesters entered the vicinity of the Capitol.

McConnell assured that the senators will continue, "following the laws and the Constitution", the appointment in which the results of the elections in which Joe Biden beat Donald Trump at the beginning of November will be certified.

The chamber "began this afternoon with the work of honoring the will of the American people and counting the votes of the Electoral College," said the Republican leader.

"We have fulfilled this mission for more than two centuries, even when our nation has been at war (...) the clock of our democracy has always ticked," he concluded.

Hundreds of protesters forcibly entered Parliament, a few hours earlier, with the intention of preventing the validation of Biden's triumph.

A woman died after being shot inside the building.

Due to the tension, a curfew was declared.
