President Donald Trump made his reappearance on Twitter on Thursday evening by posting a video statement.
He had been dismissed from the social platform the day before, because of a series of messages and videos in which he persisted in not acknowledging his defeat in the presidential election while not strongly condemning his supporters who had stormed the Capitol.
Donald Trump's account had been suspended for 12 hours.
The president also had to delete the offending messages himself to regain control of his Twitter account.
The social network warns, however, that it reserves the right to permanently block Donald Trump if the latter persists in violating the rules for using the platform, which in particular prohibit calls for violence and disinformation on the election.
Twitter was the first social platform to take action against Donald Trump's statements on Wednesday, the day of the Capitol invasion.
24 hours later, she appears isolated compared to some competitors, who have taken tougher action on the incumbent president.
A brief overview:
Facebook
Donald Trump's Facebook and Instagram accounts are frozen indefinitely, and at least until January 20, the date of the handover with President-elect Joe Biden.
Mark Zuckerberg justified this decision in a note published Thursday.
“
The shocking events of the past 24 hours prove that Donald Trump intends to use the time he has left to undermine the peaceful transition of power with Joe Biden,
” he wrote.
This is why “
we believe that letting the president use our services during the transition period represents too great a risk.
"According to the president of Facebook,"
the context has changed.
Our platforms have been used to incite violent insurgency against a democratically elected government.
"
Snapchat
The social network specializing in sending ephemeral photos and videos has suspended the official account of the US president until further notice.
The sanction will be lifted when Snapchat decides.
Donald Trump uses Snapchat to distribute the content he posts on Facebook or Twitter.
In June, the social network had already reduced the visibility of the presidential account.
Only his subscribers can see his Snaps.
They no longer appear in the Discover tab, where celebrity and media posts are stored.
Twitch
The Amazon platform, which specializes in broadcasting live videos, has also suspended Donald Trump's account for an indefinite period.
"
Given the exceptional circumstances and the President's inflammatory rhetoric, we believe this is a necessary step to protect our communities and prevent Twitch from being used to incite further violence,
" said justified the company.
The latter will decide whether or not to uphold its decision after the handover of January 20.
It may seem surprising that a head of state is present on a platform best known for the distribution of video games.
But Donald Trump uses Twitch as an additional channel to broadcast his campaign meetings or press conferences live.
It also allows it to reach the platform's audience, a
gaming
community
that is far from being insensitive to conservative rhetoric.
Shopify
Shopify is not a social network, but this platform which makes it possible to easily build online stores has also taken sanctions against the American president.
She closed two shops on Thursday linked to Donald Trump's campaign committee and the Trump Organization, the conglomerate of the outgoing president's family.
TrumpStore.com and shop.donaldjtrump.com allowed the purchase of merchandise, such as t-shirts, caps or champagne flutes with the Make America Great Again or Trump 2020 logo.
"
President Donald Trump's actions violate our terms of service, which prohibit promoting or supporting organizations or individuals who turn a blind eye to violence if it advances a cause,
" the company said.
However, other Trump-related stores, such as officialtrump2020store.com, are still online.
Youtube
YouTube did not suspend Donald Trump's official account, but deleted Wednesday night's video.
The YouTube platform changed a point in its moderation policy in the aftermath of the events on Capitol Hill.
From now on, any video contesting the results of the American presidential election will receive a "
strike
", or in the language of YouTube a one-week suspension.
Three "
strikes
" received in less than 90 days will lead to the banning of the offending channel.
YouTube specifies that this new policy will apply to "
any channel, whoever is behind
". One way of indicating that the outgoing president is concerned, but also any supporter or conspiracy theorist. The video platform is based on the certification, Thursday in Congress, of Joe Biden's victory in the presidential election.
