President
confirmed.
This
result ticker of
the events in the US state is updated regularly.
Update from January 7th, 5:15 p.m.:
With the election of their
Senators Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff
in Georgia, the Democrats in the second
chamber of
parliament of the USA have
ostensibly
only achieved a
stalemate
(see below).
In fact, in addition to the House of Representatives, they now also have a
majority
in the US Senate
: In the event of a stalemate in votes, the Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris has the right to establish a majority with her vote, according to the American constitution.
What are the benefits for future President Joe Biden?
The 77-year-old can
tackle
targeted reforms and personnel decisions with
strong support
in Congress:
Personnel
Decisions
:
The Senate is responsible for approving key U.S. officials, including ministers and their deputies, ambassadors, senior military officials, and the chiefs of numerous federal agencies, through decisions that are first made in committees and then approved in plenary.
The Senate also has the right to confirmation from judges, in particular the judges of the Supreme Court.
This court, in turn, decides on important social issues such as abortion law and the legal situation for homosexual couples.
Rapid implementation of reforms:
It is the first time since Barack Obama's presidency began in 2009 that a party has a double majority in the Senate and in the House of Representatives.
Obama had used this to implement a major rescue program for the economy after the financial crisis in 2008 and his flagship project for health care reform (Obamacare) *.
Georgia election: results official - Senate Democrats with majority
Update from January 7th, 1:20 p.m.:
With sensational successes in the
Senate runoff elections in Georgia
, the Democrats of the future
President Joe Biden
have secured control of the second Chamber of Parliament - while at the same time the supporters of the elected President Donald Trump rioted in Washington.
Biden's supporters
Raphael Warnock
and
Jon Ossoff prevailed
against their Republican opponents
in
Atlanta
after the results available on Thursday.
Since the Democrats will control the entire Congress in the future, the room for maneuver for Biden will expand considerably.

Ossoff prevailed by almost
25,000 votes ahead
of Republican Senator David Perdue.
According to the broadcasters
NBC
and
ABC, the
information was based
on a count of 98 percent of the votes.
At 33, Ossoff is the youngest US Senator since Biden himself, who took office in 1973.
He is also the first Jewish senator to represent the state of Georgia.
Pastor Warnock, 51, becomes the first African American to stand for Georgia in the Senate.
He prevailed in the runoff election against Republican Kelly Loeffler.
The Democrats come up with the two seats from
Georgia
on
a total of 50 seats
in the US Senate.
There is now a stalemate in the Senate, as both Democrats and Republicans have 50 seats.
In the event of a stalemate, however, the future Vice President
Kamala Harris *
, who by virtue of her office will also be President of the Senate, has the casting vote.
This is how Harris can get a Democratic majority.

In the second race, the

DeKalb County
.

That will be 171k +.

to have.

Georgia
, says it is not yet clear how high the
overall
turnout
was in Georgia.

the event of
a close
interim result
, the postal votes from overseas and from the military could play a role, which can still arrive by Friday.
All polls in Georgia have closed.

Georgia election: First results are there - especially from voters who cast their votes before election day
Update from January 6, 2:05 a.m.:

Fulton County
, the region around Georgia's capital Atlanta, according to the county's election officer, more than 450,000 people have cast their votes.
According to CNN, he compared that turnout to the November election when there were around 528,000 voters.
This is a good number for a runoff election.
Many of the votes that are currently included in the interim results are votes that were cast before election day.
After about
26 percent of the
votes counted, the candidates are again much closer together
(source: CNN):
Jon Ossoff
(Democrat): 52.6 percent //
David Perdue
(Republican, incumbent): 47.4 percent

But that only

a few counties from
Georgia
.
The race can still change significantly.
Georgia Election Results: Runoff Elections Necessary Because No One Has Reached 50 Percent Hurdle Before
First report from January 5, 10:12 p.m .:
Atlanta, Georgia - There are
two Senate
runoff elections
with enormous significance for political events in Washington.
Because if both
Democrats
win their runoff election, it will be 50:50 in the Senate.
The Vice-President-elect would then have the casting vote
Kamala Harris of the Democrats.
For the plans of President-elect
Joe Biden *
, who is due to take office on January 20, the
Senate *
important.
Because with a majority of the
Republicans
, as at times under Barack Obama, they could block far-reaching plans, for example on the climate or the health system.
7 p.m. local time, i.e. 1 a.m. German time, close in
Georgia *
the polling stations.
The
runoff elections became
necessary because none of the candidates in the US election on November 3, 2020 managed to win the necessary 50 percent of the vote.
A Republican incumbent was very close to it.
Results of the Senate election in Georgia * on November 3, 2020
(Source: CNN)
:
David Perdue
(Republican, incumbent): 49.7 percent //
Jon Ossoff
(Democrat): 47.9 percent
Raphael Warnock
(Democrat): 32.9 percent //
Kelly Loeffler
(Republican, incumbent): 25.9 percent
In the race between
Warnock
and
Loeffler, it
is important to note that another Republican candidate received 20 percent of the vote in the first election.
Are these voters now giving Loeffler their vote?
Georgia Election: In polls it looks like a very close race
In the last
polls
published by the data website FiveThirtyEight (as of January 5), the two Democratic candidates were slightly ahead.
But the race is very close, which is why surveys can be deceiving here.
Many voters cast their votes before Tuesday.
Although the
turnout is
not as high as in the
2020 US election *
, presidential elections are something very special.
Gabriel Sterling,
Georgia
Election Commissioner
, gave a press conference Tuesday noon (local time).
According to him, 1,018,382 voters voted in advance by
postal vote
, and 2,074,994 people cast their
votes
personally
in the
early voting process
.
So before Election Day, over three million people in Georgia were voting.
It's Runoff Election Day!
If you're heading to the polls today, don't forget to:
Go early.
Bring your ID.
Wear a mask.
Social distance at the polls. # BeAGeorgiaVoter
- GeorgiaGov (@georgiagov) January 5, 2021
When there will be an
end result
is not yet certain.
As a reminder: after the US election on November 3, 2020, it took ten days for a result to be determined.
However, the
New York Times points
out several reasons why it might not be that long this time.
Although many voters once again voted by postal vote, on the one hand there are fewer candidates on the slips of paper, which speeds up the counting.
There is also a new rule in
Georgia
that allows poll workers to make important preparations before the polls close.
The actual counting process may not begin until 7 p.m. local time, but this preparatory work could save a lot of time.
Georgia Election: Postal votes can still arrive through Friday
Additional postal votes from overseas and the military can arrive by Friday.
Depending on how close the race gets, the lesser or greater importance.
At the start of the
count
, there is a good chance the Republican candidates are ahead.
That was already the case in the presidential election.
Because traditionally Republicans prefer to vote on election day, whereas more Democrats, also now because of the corona pandemic, vote by postal vote.
As soon as these voices flow in, the result could possibly change.
