Joe Biden on Friday left Congress the responsibility of whether or not to open impeachment proceedings against Donald Trump 12 days before the end of his term, as many Democratic parliamentarians are calling for after the violence against Capitol Hill.

The president-elect will take office on January 20 and has hinted that he does not support such a procedure, doomed to failure in Congress at such a short time, with a Senate that will remain with a Republican majority until that date.

The

"fastest way"

to see Donald Trump leave the White House,

"will be when we take the oath on the 20th,"

said Joe Biden, alongside his future vice president Kamala Harris.

"We will therefore concentrate on our work and Congress can decide how to proceed" in the

face of the outgoing president, he insisted, during a speech from his stronghold of Wilmington, Delaware.

“What happens before or after is up to Congress to decide.

But I can't wait for him to step down

,

continued Joe Biden.

"He is a shame on the country,"

one of the

"most incompetent presidents in the history of the United States".

The person had announced shortly before, with a laconic tweet, that he would not attend the inauguration ceremony of Joe Biden.

The latter is delighted.

"It's a good thing,"

the Democrat said, blowing a smile:

"It's one of the few things he and I have ever agreed on."

Vice-President Mike Pence is

"welcome,"

he added, however.

Democrats control the majority in the House of Representatives and could therefore initiate the impeachment process quickly.

But Donald Trump should then be tried in the Senate.

In power since 2017, the Republican billionaire has already been targeted in Congress by an infamous impeachment procedure at the end of 2019. He was acquitted in the Senate in early 2020.
