High-ranking church officials in the US have backed calls for the immediate resignation of the elected US President Donald Trump.
"President Donald J. Trump's actions and words have endangered the security of the country and its government institutions by instigating a violent, deadly, seditious mob attack on the US Capitol," said an open letter circulated Friday (local time) from the National Council of Churches, the largest ecumenical body in the United States.
The letter is addressed to Vice President Mike Pence, members of Congress and members of Trump's cabinet.
"As leaders of the member communities of the National Council of Churches of Christ in the United States (NCC), we believe the time has come for President of the United States, Donald J. Trump, to resign immediately," the church officials continued.
"If he is not ready to resign, we urge you to use the possibilities provided by our democratic system."
The Democrats in Congress are already threatening Republican Trump with impeachment proceedings if he does not resign.
In a letter to the members of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi wrote on Friday: She wanted to start preparations for another impeachment immediately if Trump does not resign immediately.
At the same time, the House spokeswoman urged Republicans to join the attempt to remove Trump from office.
