The year 2021 has only just begun and many are hoping for an end to the corona pandemic.
Can we travel normally again in summer?
We are currently still dealing with an extended lockdown in Germany.
But how does it look in summer?
Many hope that the approved vaccines * and the high temperatures will
contain
the
corona pandemic to
such an extent that normal travel will be possible again in the sunny months.
But is that just wishful thinking?
TUI CEO Fritz Joussen has made his forecast.
Holidays in 2021 like before the pandemic?
That's what the TUI boss says
"We expect a
largely normal summer,
" said Joussen of the
Rheinische Post
(January 2nd issue).
Nevertheless, "
only around 80 percent as many flights will be offered
as in the years before the Corona crisis in order to achieve optimal utilization".
During the holidays in July and August, many flights on routes in the Mediterranean are expected to be booked out quickly.
In May the offer was already 50 percent full.
In addition, the TUI CEO expects that vacationers will spend more money on their trips in 2021.
Not because travel is becoming more expensive, but because many will redeem their vouchers for canceled trips.
“
Customers book higher quality
.
Many have additional leeway in their budget, then choose a 5-star hotel instead of a 4-star hotel. ”In addition, market research shows that after the Corona period, people are longing to go on nice trips again.

Due to the current vaccinations, Joussen even thinks that travel restrictions will be unnecessary: "If we have protected the particularly vulnerable groups from infection, the restrictions can fall sharply overall".
According to the
Travelbook
portal, Aage Dünhaupt, press spokesman for TUI Deutschland, also stated in November 2020
: “I think
the desire to travel will return sooner
than the aircraft will be available.” Therefore, air travel in 2021 could become more expensive for the time being.
He also assumes that a new travel trend will spread:
slow travel
.
Travel would gain a "new appreciation" after long renunciation.
It won't be like in 2019: An analysis by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) shows that tourism will only return to the level it was before the pandemic in two and a half to four years.
Joussen also does not expect a fully recovered tourism industry until 2022.
