24 artists present a variety of works inspired by the cultural heritage of Damascus in the Mezzeh culture

Damascus Remembered The title of the exhibition organized by the Arab Cultural Center in Mezzeh for 24 plastic artists with the aim of reviving the heritage and strengthening the Syrian identity within the efforts of the Ministry of Culture to pay attention to the tangible and intangible heritage.

The plastic artist Ahmed Shamma explained that he chose a painting about one of the old neighborhoods of Damascus, the western door in the Umayyad Mosque, and the coffee of Al-Nawfara, as this place constitutes a true documentary material for the Damascene reality, as if it were a photograph that he presented with a painting.

Damascene heritage artist Nazir Baroudi explained that it is necessary to remind our children and grandchildren of our beautiful heritage that we lived because people depend on the heritage with their present and planning for the future, explaining that he trusted his works for the Hejaz station and the electric train that the Syrians used in their transportation within the city of Damascus until the 1960s.

Arabic calligraphy artist Nariman Al-Hamami indicated that her participation came with a painting from Al-Diwani Calligraphy, adopting the method of combining colors, using the golden color of the phrase, the burgundy acrylic colors and their gradations on the floor, referring to the Arabic calligraphy and its shapes, among the important elements of the heritage.

Fine artist Razan Kilani participated in a painting drawn with the traditional faience craft of a flower vase in which she used the techniques of color, fabric and hand sewing to show that the Syrian woman is attached to her roots and traditions.

The plastic artist Basma Al-Halawani participated in three works on the Damascene heritage, using the oil colors of the lanes and houses, indicating the importance of evoking the heritage in the works of plastic art.

The plastic artist, Moataz Al-Omari, explained that his participation in a painting about the neighborhoods in old Damascus and a picture of a Damascene woman in addition to small paintings expressing his love for this beautiful land, referring to his use of acrylic colors in addition to the effects of silk screen.

Wassim Mobaide, Director of Culture in Damascus, spoke about the need to pay attention to Damascene folklore, based on the projects of the Ministry of Culture related to tangible and intangible heritage, noting the works participating in the exhibition, which make the visitor feel as if he is walking through the old neighborhoods of Damascus with its stones, greenery and jasmine.

Lubna Haddad, head of the culture of Mezzeh, indicated that the exhibition is diverse in its approach to heritage and ancient Damascus in all its details in the distant and recent past with different types of art due to the importance of heritage in preserving identity.
