European Union Foreign Policy Commissioner Josep Borrell criticized the storming of supporters of the outgoing US President Donald Trump, the US Capitol, at the instigation of the latter.
"There are political leaders all over the world who are ready to undermine democratic institutions," Borrell was quoted by media as saying in a blog post on social media, calling for confronting attempts to violate the independence of these institutions, populist leaders ’demagoguery, misinformation and spreading false news.
Borrell continued: Everyone should realize that “if we accept setbacks after setbacks, even if they seem simple, democracy and its values and institutions can eventually vanish and irreversibly disappear.” Adding: “If anyone has any doubts about this, then what happened in terms of events. In Washington it appears that misinformation is a real threat to democratic countries.
Borrell considered that what happened last Wednesday in Washington was nothing but the culmination of the very worrying developments that have taken place in the world in recent years.
Last Wednesday, Trump supporters stormed the "Capitol" building, instigated by him, and rioted and violence resulted in the death of five people, including a policeman who later succumbed to his wounds, and dozens of others were arrested.
