It could be described as a prime example of an intact village community: a group of Hundham citizens have been involved in local projects for years.

Now the bustling group has achieved the next coup: a school bus shelter on Marienplatz.

Hundham

- The fact that the new bus shelter at Hundhamer Marienplatz is empty most of the time is not due to a lack of demand.

Rather, the renewed lockdown and school closure is to blame that no children's laughter echoes through the wooden shelter - and currently, of course, the Christmas holidays.

But when it starts again with face-to-face lessons, the offspring in Hundham no longer have to fear wind and weather while waiting for the school bus - thanks to an initiative by the village community.

Hundhamer build bus shelters as a community project

As the Fischbachau CSU councilor Michael Gartmaier reports, there were considerations decades ago to set up a bus shelter at the Marienplatz stop.

But the idea should only be put into practice at the end of 2020.

Hundhamer Anderl Floßmann got the ball rolling.

A spontaneous action, reports Gartmaier.

But there was great support among the population and Floßmann succeeded in motivating half the town to help.

In order not to block the sidewalk, the initiators decided on a location in the adjacent meadow.

It belongs to the dog hunter Werner Simon.

Unlike in other municipalities, those involved in the bus shelters were spared lengthy land negotiations.

“The Simon family agreed in advance to make part of their property available,” reports Gartmaier enthusiastically.

Construction was just as straightforward.

A number of tradespeople from across the community donated materials from wood to glass and plaster to the gutter and screws.

Fathers and grandfathers used manual skills to ensure that the building was finished in time for the first snow.

The congregation also did nothing and paid for the foundation and the roof panels.

The building yard also moved out, reports Mayor Johannes Lohwasser.

The village community took over the remaining costs despite generous donations and fed the hardworking workers.

The mayor expressly welcomes the Hundhamer's commitment.

“Imitation is welcome,” says Lohwasser.

Indeed, something is already emerging in this regard.

Lohwasser is pleased to report that he has heard signals from the Auerberg for a similar project.

"We as a community try to support as much as possible," promises the town hall chief.

The Hundhamer, on the other hand, hope that their new bus shelter will not only be used by the students, but will also be used more often by the buses.

The aim is to make the switch from the car to local public transport more attractive - especially for the youngest citizens.

One can only hope that more frequent bus traffic will also be sought, says Gartmaier.

"So that in the future it will be said more often: Next stop at Hundham Marienplatz."

The 20 or so schoolchildren who get on here regularly have a lot more comfort thanks to the new bus shelter.

There is even a bench.

To rest in case the satchel presses heavily on the little shoulders again.

The initiators of the project are happy to have done something good for the youngsters.

But they too have a wish: "Keep the bus house clean, otherwise we will dismantle it again."
