Left party congress only after the federal election?

The left actually want to elect their new leadership shortly. But because of the shutdown, according to SPIEGEL information, the comrades are considering postponing the party congress - maybe even until after the general election.

Under normal circumstances, the left would long ago have a new tip.

Last June, the successor to the chairmen Katja Kipping and Bernd Riexinger should be clarified.

But because of the corona crisis, the comrades canceled the party conference.

They were also unable to keep the replacement date at the end of October.

Elections are now to take place at a decentralized party congress on February 26th and 27th - that's the plan so far.

However, given the tense corona situation, nothing could come of it.

According to SPIEGEL information, the board of directors is considering burying this project as well.

At the meeting of the top committee at the traditional start of the year for the left, the comrades discussed various alternatives on Sunday.

This is what several participants report.

A variant is therefore a postponement until after the federal election.

Kipping presented options

According to the information, party leader Kipping addressed these and other options, including digital voting with postal voting and reducing the decentralized party conference meetings to ten people each.

So far it has been planned that a maximum of one hundred comrades will meet at a total of 16 locations.

Kipping has now made it clear at the meeting that she absolutely does not favor a delay.

However, there are massive reservations in the party against postal votes.

On the other hand, face-to-face events, regardless of the form, are considered by some comrades to be not negotiable at the present time - even if this should be legally permissible.

According to SPIEGEL information, the Saxon state chief Stefan Hartmann in particular spoke out in favor of at least considering a long-term postponement.

"What kind of signal would that be if we tell people to stay at home and we meet for the party congress?" He said when asked.

Hartmann also rejects a catch-up date in summer.

"Then we are in the middle of the election campaign and should concentrate on getting a good result in the federal election." Others say that such a postponement is "definitely the last scenario if nothing really were possible."

One board member said it was not a "realistic perspective".

On hold

The matter is highly explosive for the left.

It is almost certain that the Thuringian state chief Susanne Hennig-Wellsow and the Hessian parliamentary group leader Janine Wissler will take over the leadership of the federal party.

The party had hoped that the election of the two women in time for the election campaign would create a lasting optimism.

The two women have also been on hold for months.

A state that could drag on for a long time.

With Kipping and Riexinger, two chairmen on demand would lead the left through the super election year.

The comrades also want to examine the matter legally by the next board meeting on January 23rd.
