Authorities in Indonesia announced today (Sunday) that they have located the location of the black boxes of the Boeing 737 that crashed in the sea yesterday.

Rescue crews also said they found body parts, clothing details and scrap metal in the crash area.

Authorities said they had begun efforts to haul the boxes from the sea.

The Srivijaya Airlines plane disappeared from the radar about four minutes after taking off from Jakarta, the capital with 62 people on board, including 56 passengers and six crew members.

"We hope we can get them back soon," a military source said of the boxes, without giving a time estimate. "The search will continue into the night," said a search and rescue unit representative.

Authorities have yet to say what led to the crash, and whether they believe there are any survivors.

Passengers' relatives were asked to provide DNA samples and dental records to help identify the bodies.

This is the first significant plane crash in Indonesia since the one that occurred in 2018, when 189 passengers and crew were killed.

The plane, owned by Lyon Air, crashed in the middle of the sea after losing contact with it minutes after takeoff.

The death toll from plane crashes in Indonesia is higher than in any other country in the world in the last decade.

Pieces of debris from the plane that crashed last night were brought to the port of Jakarta by rescuers, including the electronic altimeter, emergency parachute and a piece of metal that apparently belongs to the tail of the plane.

One of the pieces of metal found was painted blue and red, the colors of Airline Airlines.

Indonesian President Joko and his friend have expressed "deep condolences" following the crash and urged the public to pray for the missing.

"We feel helpless and hope to receive information."

"We feel helpless, and can only wait and hope to get some information soon," Irpensia Rianto told reporters, five of whose children were on the flight.

According to Flightradar24 tracking service, the plane took off at 14:36, climbing to an altitude of 10,900 feet in four minutes.

The plane then began a steep descent and stopped transmitting data 21 seconds later.

At this stage it is not yet known what caused the sudden descent of the plane.

Safety experts say it will take many more months until the circumstances of the case are clarified.

Transportation Ministry spokesman said that air traffic control asked the pilot why the plane deviates north and facing the planned route, a few seconds before disappearing radar. The pilot had extensive experience of decades.

The plane was old, son of almost 27 years, Boeing 737 500. "We are in touch with our customers and are about to support them during this difficult time," Boeing said in a statement.
