US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said last night (Saturday) that he was removing restrictions on contacts between U.S. officials and their counterparts in Taiwan.

The move is expected to upset China and increase tensions between Beijing and Washington in the last days of President Donald Trump.

China sees democratic Taiwan as part of its territory, and regularly describes Taiwan as the most sensitive issue in its relations with the United States.

While the United States, like most countries, has no official relations with Taiwan, the Trump administration has increased backing for the island nation, through arms deals and passing laws designed to help Taiwan cope with pressure from China.

Pompeo that for several decades the State Department has created complex internal restrictions on relations between Taiwanese officials and American diplomats, service personnel and other officials.

"The United States government has taken these actions unilaterally, in an attempt to appease the communist regime in Beijing," Pompeo said in a statement.

"Today I announce that I am removing all self-restrictions."

The move appears to be another attempt by Pompeo and outgoing President Trump's Republican administration to take a tough hand against China before Joe Biden takes office on January 20.

Bonnie Glazer, an Asian expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, said that among other things, the restrictions prevented Taiwanese representatives from entering the State Department, and instead meetings were held at hotels.

She said, "The Biden administration will not be justifiably happy with a decision of this magnitude coming in the last days of the Trump administration," she said.

A source in the Biden administration said the president-elect would continue to support a "peaceful solution" to the issue in the best interests of Taiwan's citizens.

Taiwan welcomed the move.

A senior official on the island who is involved in the island's security plans said it is the biggest change in the states of the United States relative to the island in recent years.

He said the two major parties in the United States have always supported US-Taiwan contacts.

"This reflects closer cooperation on regional and global issues," said the source, who spoke anonymously.

Pompeo, who sees China as the biggest threat to the United States in the long run, has used the issue of Taiwan to pressure China many times throughout his tenure.

He said last November that Taiwan, which split from China after the civil war in which the Communists won in 1949, "is not part of China."

In Beijing, they warned of serious consequences.

Thursday bile China that the United States and Taiwan are "playing with fire" because of the coming visit of the US ambassador to the United Nations.

During recent visits of US officials on the island in August and September, sent to China fighter jets to the island. The visit of the Minister of Health Alex Azar was the first of A senior administration official since Washington severed official ties with Taipei in favor of Beijing in 1979. Despite the lack of recognition, the United States remains Taiwan's biggest supporter in the international arena and is legally obligated to help it defend itself.
