After Donald Trump's supporters, some of them violent, stormed the Capitol, the majority of US citizens are in favor of the early removal of the current president.

In a survey by the Ipsos Institute for the television channel ABC News, 56 percent of those questioned said that Trump should be removed from his office before the handover to Joe Biden on January 20.

43 percent were against it.

Two-thirds of all participants blamed Trump for an angry mob's attack on the congress building, in which five people died.

The loser had previously stirred up the crowd and called on them to move to the Capitol.

Numerous Democratic politicians and a few Republicans are now calling for Trump to be removed from office.

It is possible that the Democrats will initiate an impeachment procedure in the coming days.

To be successful, they would need at least 66 votes in the Senate - where the Democrats only have 50 Senators.

The poll shows how extreme the outgoing president is dividing his country.

94 percent of Democratic, but only 13 percent of Republican supporters are for Trump's sacking.

Among the citizens who see themselves as independent, 58 percent want to be impeached.

61 percent of Republican voters say Trump didn't do anything wrong

98 percent of all Democratic and 69 percent of independent, but only 31 percent of Republican voters blamed Trump for the attacks on the Capitol.

61 percent of Republican sympathizers even said, according to ABC, that Trump had "done nothing wrong."

Joe Biden's election victory was declared legitimate by more than two-thirds of all respondents - including a clear majority of independent voters.

On the other hand, there are still many doubters among the supporters of the Republicans.

Trump himself does not recognize Biden's clear victory to this day, although he cannot present any evidence of manipulation and although his team has lost more than 60 times in various courts.

Biden enjoys higher approval than his congressmen.

Fifty-three percent of respondents said they trusted the future president to protect US democracy.

48 percent believed the Democrats in Congress could do this.

Republicans in Congress have 31 percent.

And Donald Trump?

At least 30 percent, despite everything.

This is how the data was collected:

In the

"ABC News / Ipsos poll

"

on January 8 and 9, 570 US citizens over the age of 18 were interviewed.

The survey took place online and the participants were selected according to categories such as gender, age, ethnic origin, education, place of residence, income and identification with a political party.

The aim was to create the most representative image of society possible.
