The flag of the Confederate States of America, too
called battle flag
, waved over soldiers of the breakaway South in the US Civil War.
Their garish design helped the troops to find their way in the fog of battle.

On Wednesday, one of the Capitol
Storms proudly
wore this symbol of
white supremacy
through the corridors of the Senate.
The flag was almost bigger than him.
Photos document how he passed two old oil paintings - one a picture of former Vice President John Calhoun, a slavery advocate, the other a portrait of Senator Charles Sumner, an opponent of slavery.
The man with the flag, a supporter of Donald Trump, seemed to ignore the paintings.
But he was well aware of the signal effect of his act.
"We have set an example," he later boasted in an interview with SPIEGEL.

"The Confederates have stormed the Capitol after all," said "Nation" correspondent Elie Mystal.
