The resignation comes five days after the assault on the Capitol by the president's supporters, although the secretary did not refer to the events directly in his resignation letter. He is the third member of the Cabinet to leave his post after the riots.

The acting secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, Chad Wolf, presented his resignation on Monday, according to what he announced in a letter sent to the department obtained by our sister network NBC News.

His resignation comes five days after the assault on the Capitol by the president's supporters, who

encouraged his supporters to demonstrate against the legislators who were in session to ratify the victory of the president-elect, Joe Biden.

“I am leaving the position of interim secretary.

I am saddened to take this step, as it was my intention to serve the Department until the end of this Administration.

Unfortunately, this action is justified by recent events, including ongoing and meritless court rulings regarding the validity of my authority as Acting Secretary, ”Wolf said in the resignation letter.
