Grandparents in the corona pandemic: "Grandma and grandpa have never been so popular"

Mr. Schneider, this Christmas, many people wanted to spend the holidays with their parents and grandparents.

Did old and young move closer together in the Corona year?

Schneider:

What we were able to observe is more of a kitsch phenomenon.

I'm not suggesting that children don't like to see their parents or grandparents.

But for decades I've been asked for advice on how to survive the family holidays.

Now the question was suddenly: How do I survive without a family?

Grandma and Grandpa have never been so popular.

I don't think this longing was as common as it was portrayed in the media.

Loneliness in old people's homes has not only existed since Corona.

SPIEGEL:

Didn't family ties strengthen in the pandemic?

Schneider:

For some who were able to reconcile homeschooling and home office, a rural form of family may actually have emerged: all under one roof.

Most of them, however, report how overwhelmed they were.
