The Israeli foreign minister has appointed a diplomat to reopen the Israeli diplomatic mission in Morocco, an official said on Monday (January 11th), with the two countries normalizing their relations last month.

David Govrin, Israel's ambassador to Egypt between 2016 and 2020, will be the charge d'affaires in Rabat and take up his duties "
in the next few days,
" said an Israeli official.
Morocco and Israel signed a US-sponsored agreement to normalize their ties in Rabat in December, with bilateral agreements focusing on direct air links, water management, financial system connections and an agreement visa waiver for diplomats.
Morocco closed its liaison office in Tel Aviv in 2000, at the start of the second Palestinian intifada (uprising).
A Moroccan delegation visited the site two weeks ago, laying the foundations for a reopening.
Morocco was the fourth country to normalize its relations with Israel in 2020, after the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Sudan.
In a phone call, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu invited King Mohammed VI of Morocco to visit the Hebrew state.
Morocco is home to the largest Jewish community in North Africa, with some 3,000 people.
About 700,000 Jews of Moroccan origin live in Israel.
